October 11, 2013 at 6:19 am #1259674People say I’m the worst with my money. I spend it on my friends, on clothes, on short term things that have no significance to my long term success. I used to think like this until it hit me the other day and I stopped listening to everyone. It makes sense to me that people want to save money for good things in the future but what doesn’t make sense is when people are choosing this over their happiness. I care about long term expenses just as much if not more than short term ones (deep, deep down) but I don’t see why buying something you really want is such a problem. I think it makes you who you are personally. Making your friends happy, making yourself happy, that’s what I truly see when I spend money on something I really want. I’m not going to suffer and save every dime I make for a day that might not even come. Nothing is guaranteed. Just because you spend money on these “insignificant” things does not mean you won’t be successful. It’s a part of life to me. Am I still going to want that Prada bag when i’m 65? No. I’m going to buy things that make me happy because it’s all about memories for me. A life full of memories with the things/people you love or a life full of selfish working, saving, working, saving and for what? No one should ever have to deprive themselves of the things they love. I wonder if anyone else has this p.o.v
October 12, 2013 at 5:56 pm #1259204The saving part is so you can pay for things without making you skint that month really. So when my timing belt needs changed I don’t have to eat beans on toast.
Disclaimer – I don’t actually save, but I’m starting to realise I kinda need to. Especially because my timing belt does actually needs changed!
What I’m most worried about is having to pay for rent when I’m 70 because I’ve no job and not been able to buy a house.. wtf do you do then? I don’t buy much at all, certainly not little shity things I don’t need. I usually buy expensive things which are well made and aesthetically pleasing, maybe twice a year I treat myself to something but I’ll use the shit out of it. Nothing worse than buying things that never get used or only used a couple of times. I don’t have a modern phone or buy many clothes etc but I’d happily spend a grand on a Macbook and a nice car. Everyone at work is out buying the latest tablet and I just don’t see the point. We live in a consumer driven world (Bill Hicks sketch ‘little happy consumers’ comes to mind). Capitalism is based on growth so they need people to buy buy buy to keep the wheel spinning. We can’t keep growth up like that as everything you buy requires earth’s materials which are finite. it’s not rocket science it’s common sense that exponential growth fuelled by needless consumerism isn’t sustainable.
