January 31, 2007 at 1:06 pm #1040397Quote:Drink figures cause alarm

A drunk man is helped by paramedicsMore people are treated at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford for alcohol-related problems than at almost every other hospital across the Thames Valley, new figures have revealed.
The news comes after the hospital decided alcohol-related admissions had reached such an alarming level it needed to employ a nurse to find out more about drinking patterns in Oxford.
The report, produced by the South East England Public Health Observatory, found that in the 12 months to April 2005 roughly three people from Oxford per day (700 people a year per 100,000 of population) were admitted to the John Radcliffe for alcohol-related reasons. That is the second highest rate of alcohol-related hospital admissions in the Thames Valley, with Cherwell having the third highest rate at just over 600 admissions to hospital a year per 100,000 of population. Milton Keynes topped the league with 750. All three were well above the South East average of 550 admissions per 100,000 people.
Dr Philip Hormbrey, an A&E consultant at the JR, said: “To someone who works in an emergency department these statistics are not hugely surprising, but the number of people we treat for alcohol-related problems in Oxford is far too high.”
The report also shows that between 2000 and 2002 weekly alcohol consumption by Oxfordshire men was the highest in the South East at 19 units – about nine pints of lager or two bottles of wine.
A nurse is to be employed at the JR to identify the causes of alcohol related admissions and pass on the results to organisations such as the police and Nightsafe. It could identify, for example, if people admitted had all been drinking in a particular nightclub or part of the city centre.
Mr Hormbrey added: “No one group is any worse than any other. We treat the young, the old, male and female for alcohol-related problems.“Whereas in the past you would get a few incidents of alcohol-related injuries, now they are on a daily basis throughout the week.”
“It does not surprise me. I think Oxfordshire has particular issues. It is quite a rural county and a lot of people come into the city centre to drink. It has a large night time community, and it is also a vibrant two university city.
“And part of the culture in young people growing up now is a drinking culture.
“The culture has changed from 10 years ago when raves were the big thing. They were a problem because of the drugs, but that was not alcohol-related.”

Well i aint really suprised! took them long enough to realise…:you_crazy
January 31, 2007 at 1:07 pm #1098743January 31, 2007 at 1:23 pm #1098739that must be bad if they’re getting more in at weekends than the RBH in Reading…
January 31, 2007 at 2:18 pm #1098742Think everyone on the rave scene has been saying this all along really – the problems related to the traditional youth drink culture, which society and the government actively and passively encourage, particularly in young men (hey, its okay to go out get wasted on beer.. its to be expected of a young lad etc)… is a hell of a lot more damaging to society and causes far more problems than the alternative scenes that are out there, and in particular the free party/rave scene.
Reckon the health implications of alcohol are prob worse too!
Strikes me as ironic that amid the whole hullaballoo about binge drinking the powers that be have failed to realise that if they had left the rave scene to develop as an alternative to the town centre pub scene that it was competing with then they wouldn’t have half the problems they have today!

And by the failed attempts at prohibition, all society has done is created the worst-case scenario.
The drugs culture didn’t magically go away due to clampdowns/zero-tolerance, nor does the human desire to seek pleasure – so what increasinly happens these days is that people combine both binge-drinking and recreational drugs, particularly alcohol with amfetamine-type stimulants (speed/pills).
Of course stimulants help many to drink more, and/or alcohol
is used to help “come down” from stimulants – but it has a bigger toll of physical health problems and psychotic episodes of stranger and domestic violence (particularly on comedowns where people drink to “get rid” of negative emotions)February 6, 2007 at 12:04 pm #1098747i live in edinburgh and there has been quite a lot of articles in the local rag about the evils of buckfast. they want to have it banned but i dont think banning one type of drink iss going to help the matter. there is a huge alcohol problem in scotland and they keep blaming one thing or another but never get to the actual root of the problem. maybe if life in scotland for young people wasnt so dull they might not get pissed and attack each other (or me)
February 6, 2007 at 8:16 pm #1098744Orite Graam how’s trix?
Yeah I really can’t see that acohol in itself is the real problem here…Lord knows I’d be a lot more sane if I’d stuck to the drink and left the drugs alone (especially the trippy ones) :bounce_fl. I’ve never got into fight in me life pissed, but I’ve almost had kickings through being too frazzled on pillz…
The party scene is wicked, especially what I’ve experienced of it here in Edinburgh(+Fife+Glasgow etc.) I know it won’t happen, cos everyone is so chilled and open-minded and all but I hope people won’t start getting into the kind of frame of mind that they’re group is better than another group because they’re tripping and the other group is pissed 😉
February 7, 2007 at 2:29 am #1098741ive never gotten the whole drunken fight thing. It just dosnt make sense. I only drink an dont do any other drugs but i can party till the wee hours an still have a good time. But never feel the need to kick someones head in!!
