In order to continue providing a quality service and be able to expand it in future you will need to subscribe in order to download from our music downloads archive from now on. Our running costs have increased fairly dramatically this last year (we did 2.3TB of traffic last month) and this change has to happen in order to keep things in proportion…

2.5 terabytes in a month -wow!

maybe this will encourage some of the downloaders to contribute to the community (with posts etc) rather than just leech our files 😉

Might need to change the home page as well Dr B,

Features available include our very own radio station, clubwear and rave clothing, party pictures and a treasure trove of free music downloads.

just noticed this thread after trying to download the swankie dj mix on another thread and not being allowed.

fair play tbh, will be interesting to see how much the bandwidth usage decreases.

Have to admit I feel slightly uneasy, I can afford to subscribe now and happily do so cos I love PV and all its people. But there were times when I had no spare cash, and a download of good techno to listen to every week or two helped keep me sane. ‘sup to you of course Dr.B, I don’t know if there is any cash to spare for a small allowance maybe for registered but non-donating people …
btw can unregistered folk still get PV radio ? that was essential to me back then !

this is a good point actualy … as i can afford to subscribe now but there have been times when i havn’t and a good mix was allways welcomed in times on skintness … (allso it would be well anoying not being able to download one of my own mixs to show a friend at there house if i didn’t happen to be subscribed at the time)

btw maybe you can cut traffic costs by stopping the drugs forum getting crawled as it brings a lot of unwanted interest and also a lot of extra bandwidth frome one time wonders?

tbh alltho the forum uses some bandwith .. i would imagin it’s a very small preportion compared to downlaoed music

My concern is our costs are scaling more steeply than donations are being made so I had to make a choice however the radio is free to all and I have no plans to change that…

there are lots of users who live in the same areas, all that needs to happen is for those what can afford to download can share the files with others who are non-suscribers by whatever means are convenient to all..

i didnt mean delete them.. i meant put in the robots file or whatever it is not to scan that area and so it will attract less 1post wonder / observer traffic

In the interest of good musical karma I’m willing to offer a compromise of going to a system where downloads are freely available in the old system on and off in quarterly cycles. What do we think? Bear in mind our ability to raise money determines the quality we enjoy such as the speed of our internet access (one specific example would be deciding the maximum number of listeners we can host on the radio streams at anyone one time)…

I think all mixes over 1or 2 years old should be free for all to download, just make the new mixes for donators only?

really never seen more than 14 at the same time anyway, no reason to pay for them.

Is there a way that you can link the ability to post counts? For example, you have to post a certain amount of posts a month to be allowed to download. But then also limit this to a small number of downloads a month.

It would encourage people to join in on the forum and actually post and not leech free music, also might encourage people to donate to the site.

I doubt it is possible, but could you set it up so that non subscribers can only download files of a lower bit rate?
