Hey Guys,
I wanted to make a thread about how to get work as a DJ ..
I have been bedroom DJing for over 2 years now and in the last 6 months i have played infront of mates at small free parties and so on so forth,
Basically I would like to take it a step further, i know alot of people would love to be a DJ, but it really is my dream!!!!!
Does anybody on the forum play in nightclubs/raves? What would you normally have to do to get going in this line of work?
any advise on this would be great
Cheers,

December 22, 2010 at 11:59 pm #1233092or start your own club night at the cowley club.. charge on the door. do a few nights an create a buzz going an then move it onto a bigger club an it will grow.

see the thing is i can potentially cater for a few different styles. techno is numero uno but i’ll give most genres a go. you had any DJ work before?

why lol
December 23, 2010 at 1:00 am #1233096they hardly ever let me in there an when i do get in they kick me out anyway and coz i know the people who are putting the nights on then they get involved an it all turns into abit of a skuffle. so i tend to stay away from the volks. its hads it day anyway i rekon.

coolio, i love all forms of techno and we play lots of styles aswell, its completly up to you matey, the “scene” is drowned in acid techno so were pushing the harder side of things without so much of the acid! drumcodes, primates, anything hard firm & rolling! from planet rhyham to deathchant records we loooove the 4×4!
chk the website aswell if ya like, that will give you an idea of what were doing
December 24, 2010 at 1:06 pm #1233122You have to go to the parties you want to play at ,regularly week in week out , . Get your face known, promoters receive tonnes of faceless cd promos , you have to show your support the scene your into.
Get the promoter as wasted as possible always helps.
December 24, 2010 at 3:19 pm #1233150Ask to play free sets in bars and parties.
Whore yourself, be everyones friend.
You could try this forum as well..December 25, 2010 at 4:10 am #1233105Thank you for the advice so far guys!! I dont think I’d be on this planet if it wasn’t for decks

That’s a good point actualy. It’s ten times better to actualy get to know the person giving you a job in “music” as i once got told in college “it’s more who you know then what you know”. (alltho obv you have to know something)
December 27, 2010 at 12:43 am #1233061If you simply enjoy mixing and love the music, just carry on doing what you are doing. There is a very slim chance you will get recognised and respected and maybe get some sets off the back of that.
Or, if you want a better chance at ‘making it’ and don’t mind losing a bit of dignity:
- Go to all events and lick as much ass as possible.
- Be everybodies mate.
- Big yourself up all the time.
- Get a gang of followers who will big you up all the time.
- Hand CD’s out left right and centre and big them up all the time.
- Promise promoters that you will bring a crowd of people with you and act like a kind of sub promoter so their work is made easier but realise they will probably put you on the warm-up set.
- Set up your own night and ask promoters (who are also dj’s) from other nights to play at your night and then they feel they have to return the favour – cue lots of nights containing dj’s from all different groups returning favours to each other.
Of course there has to be a certain element of technical skills and musical understanding mixed in with the above but it’s not as important as blowing your trumpet as loud as possible, kissing ass and getting involved in an eternal cycle of favour swapping.
