Hey, first post on here!
My name is Chris and im a sociology student at london metropolitan university currently writing my dissertation – my study is on subcultural theory, looking specifically at the free party scene and the difficulties of using subcultural theories and theories of youth culture to analyse the illegal rave scene. Much of the literature regarding raves tends to be rather outdated, with an emphasis on ecstasy use, ibiza, the second summer of love and the emergence of acid house music – what the social sciences seem to be lacking is anything that concerns the illegal rave scene these days and i am aiming to present a picture of the similarities and differences of the party scene now compared to then. – one thing that really irritates me is the medias reporting on uk free parties, always referring to events such as castlemorten and the talking of the 89 summer of love when they write about parties that have happened in the last half a decade. whilst of course this is still relevant, there have obviously been a lot of changes in how parties are organised, the people that attend them, the size and length of the parties, the drugs, the music etc…
I have only been attending parties since about 2004 so other than what i have read i know little about the scene before then, only what i have read in the small amount of literature that exists, and from reading newpaper articles that tend to be negative.
Bascially, what i would like would be for some of you that were around back in the day and still attend parties now (or have done in the past few years) to maybe have a chat with me about parties, what they mean to you and how you think they have changed.
I am between Brighton and London most weeks so if anyone wanted to meet in person in either place that would be great, but also PMing on here or facebook would be fine. Even if you know somebody else that would be up for a chat, tell them to get in touch with me. DJs, regular attendees, people that have only been a few times, rig owners, anybody…. if you would like to help me out in any way it would be much appreciated!
I doubt i will bother posting this on squatjuice cos i know i wont get much real response there.
Cheers! Any other questions, please feel free to ask.
February 18, 2010 at 7:03 pm #1223262another aspect to consider is the law, that has also changed, influencing the scene somewhat in my opinion
section 63! criminal justice bill!
February 18, 2010 at 8:31 pm #1223263yes, sorry i thought i had written that in there! im actually in the process of contacting the infamous PC Jimmy May to see whether he would be willing to do a short interview with me – see how he likes it when its the other way round 😉
February 18, 2010 at 9:32 pm #1223260Good old jimmy may, would like to read an interview with him. Haha
February 18, 2010 at 10:30 pm #1223256PC Jimmy May appears to be a very intelligent and articulate officer who is is not at all shy of the Press and regularly uses it to his (and TVP’s advantage… )
February 18, 2010 at 11:19 pm #1223264yeah i dont doubt that one bit! im intersted to hear what he may have to say. is it true that they moved him to suffolk or norfolk in efforts to halt the party scene there or is this just a rumour??
if anybody knows of any other key figures in the uk scene i should speak with please list a few names. im thinking maybe i will contact someone from storm, DMT, brains kan, headfuk, and a few others just to get more of a nationwide view. any other rigs or DJs (old or new) i should try speak with??
Thanks to admin for stickying this, and thanks to partyvibe for (so far) no OB accusations!

he was still serving in TVP up until May 2009. I’ve heard other rumours he has actually retired as a constable, but this (if true) of course does not stop him acting as a consultant to the Police Service.
That said the Eastern constabularies have proven perfectly capable in halting the party scene here without his assistance, and they wouldn’t have needed his physical presence anyway to ask for assistance. cops have a entire secure section of the internet with email and secure forums/teamrooms (a bit like a cross between a forum like this and a facebook wall) they can use to share info.
by the end of the “noughties” it was hardly rocket science what cops needed to do to stop parties, people were chatting all sorts of stuff on bebo and facebook who hand over private info as soon as they see a “badge and shield”..

feds don’t need to pose as a student when they can get info really easily anyway..
February 19, 2010 at 11:03 pm #1223265no luck on the jimmy may front so far but I did only send the email yesterday.
so who can suggest any soundsystems whose members it would be worthwhile to contact?? old or new, big or small.
this should all come together quite nicely if i get a few more decent contacts!February 19, 2010 at 11:33 pm #1223259brainskan… :oh_god:
