I’m really starting to hate this rat.
The mau5 is Dead Wrong, DJs Are Artists Too –
Edit: Deadmau5 is a hater. Fair enough.
As many of you may know, deadmau5 doesn’t like me. We had a prolonged Twitter argument over his rider and, most recently, over his claim that live performance of EDM boils down to “button pushing.” Last night, this little gem was posted on Tumblr. In it, Deadmau5 suggests that live performance of EDM is a simplistic, talentless task. I’m not sure where this little superiority complex came from. The idea is that producers are the ones with real talent, and DJs are just people who weren’t good enough to make their own music.
Let me shut that down right now. Saying that DJs are not musicians because they don’t produce their own music is like saying that a painter is not an artist because he doesn’t make his own paint. That is ridiculous. The whole point of being a DJ is to arrange music into a complete performance so that people never have to stop dancing. Truly, the hour-long set is an art form that very few have mastered, and when they do, it’s beautiful. Imagine a long rollercoaster that slowly brings you up and keeps you just before the top until you can’t stand it any more before taking you to the peak and bringing you right back down. A DJ is an architect and a tour guide: they create their own little world that they are taking you through and helping you experience. To say that it’s not a performance art is an insult to the dozens of fantastic DJs that have been able to keep us entertained for hours on end by expressing their love of EDM in a way that words never could.
Look Deadmau5, I’m sorry that you don’t understand the beauty of a DJ’s art form. I’m sorry you don’t “get it”, but that does not give you the right to say that it requires no talent. There is no reason for this arbitrary division between DJs and producers. Both types of skill are valuable. We have some doctors that do five minute office visits, and some that perform hours-long surgeries, and we need one just as much as the other. There is just as much musical beauty in a four minute floor-filler as an hour long masterpiece, and as one of the most talented musicians of our time, I thought you’d understand that.
What you did was wrong. Not only did you completely trash something you simply don’t understand, you demeaned thousands of performers that have supported you throughout your career. Seriously, how dare you?
The same logic that you used can be applied to producers: all you guys do is manipulate little pre-recorded sounds on your computers. You’re not real musicians, you’re just music nerds with expensive software and effects. Then during a live performance no one notices how bad you are at creating an experience longer than your usual four-minute song because you have pretty lights and everyone is on drugs. See how ridiculous, yet scarily real that sounds? That’s exactly what you just did to all the DJs of the world. You minimized their musical ability because it’s not the same as yours. And, funny enough, you admit the fact that you aren’t really doing anything other than pressing play when you’re performing live. If that’s true, why were you perfectly happy with accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in performance fees over the years?
The truth is that deadmau5 has a bad taste in his mouth about live performances. Because, despite his status as one of the top EDM producers in the world, he has had a really rough year when it comes to high profile booking. First, he was snubbed by Ultra Music Festival, which triggered a twelve-minute Youtube rant. He was also mysteriously absent from the Electric Daisy Carnival, instead playing a gig in the UK on June 8th. It’s easy to understand why he would be sore about live shows.
Whatever the reason, the fact is that there are important roles in EDM for both producers and DJs. Some artist can do both, and they take it to the next level. Notable examples like Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto, and Carl Cox put on a fantastic show because they not only have their own music to showcase, but by using their skills and knowledge as DJs, they show us how their work adds something to the body of music as a whole. The first time I saw Avicii live, I was disappointed. He opened with an extended vocal version of Levels, and the rest of the song selection just felt wrong. I didn’t feel right listening to the rest of his set. It was like when someone puts out after ten minutes on a date. When you say that being a DJ isn’t a performance art, you are ignoring the fact that sometimes timing and order of things is just as important as the content.
There are enough people ready to criticize and belittle EDM musicians without you doing it yourselves. Whether it comes from a DJ or a producer, we should support anything that makes the music better. Because when it comes down to it, all we really have is each other.
-The SnobMarch 3, 2013 at 10:05 am #1268334DJing is an art. Heres why.
DJing is a performance art.
Therefore, DJs are performance artists.
Therefore, DJs are artists.March 3, 2013 at 10:07 am #1268324DeadRat is judging people by his own standards there – just because he’s not a proper DJ, there’s no need for the hateful cunt to tar everyone with his rabies-infested brush! Can someone just call Rentokil and have the prick dealt with please?
Fuck it, if I ever have the misfortune to meet the cunt, I would just like to say, here and now, the first thing I’m gonna do is beat the fucking shit out of him! If anyone else wishes to do the same, please feel free to do it!
March 3, 2013 at 10:22 am #1268304It’s a real shame cos I have a Deadmou5 CD someone gave me and I really like it. (old album with “faxing berlin” etc) but now I’m reluctant to play it because of his arogance towards dance music. I have been reading other stuff that he has said but I don’t want to post it. Don’t want PV to become a DJ bashing forum for the day. Too much negativity : )
Good Vibes!!
March 3, 2013 at 10:29 am #1268335Yeah.. he does have one song I like and I used to be a fan of his but he went really downhill.
March 3, 2013 at 10:36 am #1268305Yeah that’s a nice tune, I love the bassline. I hate the vocal though
March 3, 2013 at 10:37 am #1268336Yeah same it pisses me off. Especially when she starts fake orgasming and you have to turn it off/down before your neighbours think your watching the loudest porn ever. The bassline is sick though

Don’t worry mate, this can’t be considered DJ bashing, at the very most it can be considered animal cruelty – but even the RSPCA would have no problem with us all sticking the boot in on Deadmong!
March 3, 2013 at 11:08 am #1268337Let’s put him in a K hole and abduct him.

Yes mate! Let’s kidnap the cunt and force feed him all sorts of drugs – by the time he’s free, he’ll be a changed man!

Until he hits the comedown. Then he’ll be even more of an asshole, if such a thing is possible.
March 3, 2013 at 11:31 am #1268333I gotta say deadmau5 sounds like a fucking prick! He’s always wining about something on twitter, really annoys me. And that argument about “Molly” with Madonna was pathetic! Him being an electro artist you’d expect him to embrace club/rave culture. But NO he wines about it instead. + he turned about to be wrong about the whole thing loool…
+ i completely believe DJ’s are artists
Definition: A person who practices any of the various creative arts.
Pretty sure Djing is a creative art, no?
March 3, 2013 at 11:35 am #1268339Exactly. He’s a yank anyway though..
March 3, 2013 at 11:36 am #1268315If there were no DJs there’d be no one to play his music for him and he wouldn’t have the job he does now.

Yep, he knocks the drugs in the rave scene, but if the scene were a house, then drugs would be the cement that holds it together. If it weren’t for those drugs and the DJ’s he despises so much, he’d be working in the US equivalent of fucking Dixons!

Nicely put mate. The drugs are the fuel for the rave fire. Without the drugs I doubt it would have been as succesful as it has been to be honest.

Without a doubt mate! Admittedly there are a lot of us who love the music regardless, but there are also a significant number of ravers who will readily admit that they can’t listen to the music we love without being off their faces.
What we need is the rave equivalent of the Pied Piper (a Pie-Eyed Piper maybe?), who will lead DeadRat to the water’s edge and then drown the prick!

I’m guessing that’s why he wears the papier mache rat head, so people can’t recognise him on the street and do him some mischief!
March 3, 2013 at 2:26 pm #1268306I say we form a group, The dead rat Vs PartyVibe collective, we could go to events and throw rotten fruit and veg at him.
March 3, 2013 at 2:27 pm #1268307But seriously, he really needs knocking down a peg or two, his music isn’t that good.

the only deadmau5 song ive got in my collection, have exactly the same problem with.
March 3, 2013 at 3:33 pm #1268330I’ve not read all the comments so just a thought, Can he be referring to laptop dj’s? or even Radio DJ’s? Which anybody can pretty much do…
Vinyl on the other hand…yeah there is a wide range of techniques that there is an ‘art’ to, so i’m baffled how anyone can say vinyl DJ’s aint artists!March 3, 2013 at 3:36 pm #1268308@Savvydravvy 529955 wrote:

Gawd back in 2000 and whenever this style of “electro” was big I was bashing my head against the wall at work where I was forced to endure radio one every day. “Todays same music….radio one”
