sister drives a y/2001 polo gti n its a bangin little motor, only problem she had is starter motor solonoid is startin to stick but still working, hopefully i will get that after she finished.
So review is german cars are the best buy. Reliability is essential when going to a rave, heard recovery trucks can charge a £40 pick up fee and the £1 per mile there after(£2 on motorway)!!!
May 16, 2006 at 6:38 pm #1073621I have never learnt to drive a car properly, not on the road anyway. I can drive a tractor round a field and thats about it. I would like to think that I am being green or something, but basically I have never needed one. I dont like cars anyway. I hate the whole ‘car culture’ crap. Too many makes, too many people making too much money, too many wankers like Clarkson etc. Too many wanker car salespeople. I feel lke a second class citizen when I have to give way. Why should I? None of the bastards indicate anymore. I’m supposed to mind read which way they are going. I hate the change that comes over people when they climb into their little ‘cocoon’ and drown out the rest of the planet with their toss rap, hip-hop or even more annoying 80’s rock or worse. The car has taken over, its such a shame.
People think it is freedom having a car
freedom from what, walking? I believe it is one of the most selfish things to do and its just slavery by the petrol companies and the govt. are laughing all the way to the bank of england-all that lovely tax money!Just blag the train or bus or cycle or walk.

May 16, 2006 at 7:01 pm #1073583i have a 900cc automatic that gets used for leisure… accessing the countryside around here… there is virtually no public transport in most of Devon, but it’s parked up almost all the time
have a bike seat for my little one now though, so we can all go to the beach together using nothing but leg power, the views aren’t ‘boxed in’ and we don’t have to sweat it out with all the grokkels for a place to park. plus the best pubs aren’t accessible by car around here
May 16, 2006 at 7:02 pm #1073578dambo23 – I see what you mean… and have already said much the same in the previous post; and I wholly agree with a lot of the stuff about car culture.
TBH if I owned one it would just be another thing to worry about (damage, theft, keeping it away from the scum who nick and burn out cars here just out of envy) – it wouldn’t make me more of a man or anything like that.
but isn’t there a dilemma here with raves?
It is not easy to carry appreciable amounts of audio equipment on bicycle trailers (OTOH some mini-rigs have indeed been brought on to a site that way!)
People want to make a lot noise and that requires heavy stuff which is normally brought to the rave site in motor vehicles. Also although I am no Bradley Wiggins or Lance Armstrong, few others are prepared to cycle to a rave and then back again
In many cases the people who do drive end up subsidising those who do not (even if they charge petrol money there’s the depreciation, wear and tear). Also as I mentioned it is very easy to lose your license or have your vehicle taken off by cops if things go wrong at a rave. Thats one hell of a risk for people to take. A couple years ago I was well up for getting a van as soon as I had got my license then I realised the risk and costs involved…
I often feel guilty about this; I don’t often like asking people for lifts for this reason and if it means I can’t get to parties now because they are becoming increasingly held further away then I have to accept that.
OTOH I am always prepared to pay petrol money and just because I am not legally supposed to be driving cars doesn’t mean that I do not know how they work and can help with fixing them or adding accessories such as stereos, extra lights etc.
But how do we deal with the rave dilemma? However we look at it it can be argued that these events generate a lot of extra and non-essential traffic particularly as they are being forced into remote areas…

freedom from what, walking? I .It’s a long walk to Wales, to pick one of an infinite number of examples.
So the freedom I referred to was freedom of movement, one of the most fundamental human rights…
Maybe if you lived in Essex you’d understand the importance of a means by which to regularly leave…
😉

Having spent (too much) time in places like Basildon, Colchester and Walton-on-the-Naze in previous years I have to agree…

Ha – that made me laugh. I spent two of the most depressed years of my life in Southend – the sea, what?? Nothing against Essex people though – I met some corkers while there 😉
But what kept me going was escaping to Wales just about every weekend – unfortunately – running around and enjoying freedom with your legs sometimes requires the freedom a car gives you in the first place.
I would never get to see some of my family if I didn’t drive 🙁May 16, 2006 at 8:59 pm #1073618Volkswagen. German for life.

OK most of the time you have broken a law but I definitely think that “rave drivers” are targeted more than other drivers
Looks like these new monitoring systems like ANPR are a part of it – although most people driving to raves aren’t stopped there and then the cops are now storing all the number plates and putting some sort of marker on the record; so the cars are stopped later in the week for any petty little traffic offence…
May 17, 2006 at 10:02 am #1073622I drive an old blue mini. It is my little baby, my pride and joy!

Yeah but the AA doesn’t..
For my £40 membership, they got me and my fiat panda back from Newquay to Surrey when the gearbox fell out after some hungover off roading.
And I got to get fucked in the back of several AA vehicles (many transfers) – and managed to blag the driver into putting a DnB tape on loud, while flashing the emergency lights and ragging it, nout better than that on a few  ‘s !!
