Now then peeps… reckon you good people are the best to ask for advice on this one…
Me and my best mate are planning on putting a small rig together over next 6-12 months then building it bigger over a period of time.
What I’m after is technical advice on what to look for when buying, where to buy to get a good deal etc, etc.
Prob gonna start off small with 1 or 2 k rig then keep adding to it over time.
All help and advice greatly appreciated!!!
October 2, 2006 at 10:50 am #1091407Cant really help you mate (Im sure someone will be able to help though),but good luck with it,More rigs is Good!raaaraaaraaaraaa
October 2, 2006 at 11:03 am #1091397do you intend to buy or build?
October 2, 2006 at 12:42 pm #1091398how many speakers do you want and do you plant to build your own?
:weee::weee::weee:
how much are you looking to spend?
October 2, 2006 at 3:08 pm #1091402Planning to either buy or pay someone to build it for us as neither of us is really techy knowledgable enough to build it ourselves..
Apparently my mate has already started shopping round and can get a 1k rig for a grand with generator which sounds a decent deal to get us started to me – what do you think? Obviously depends on make etc, and dont have that info to hand.
October 2, 2006 at 7:04 pm #1091399generator should be diesel
more details required for comments TBH :groucho: :groucho: :groucho:
October 2, 2006 at 7:49 pm #1091395Totally don’t buy a petrol Genny they are dire.. diesel lasts longer to start with and you don’t get random power surges like u do with petrol gennys
October 4, 2006 at 10:25 am #1091403Cool – will def make sure we go down the diesel route.
Will get some spec details off my mate when I see him next and see what he’s been looking at and post them up on here.

Amps, your best bet is most likely ebay… Look for the older ones, like Peavey, or H & H etc, as they’re usually fairly indestructible (and sound good).
Also build active from the off, as reconfiguring it from passive will be a pain in the bum. Probably easiest to go 3 way to start (Behringer do a good 3way stereo crossover – CX3400 for about £75, that can later be added to with another, and run in 4 way mono for a 4 way rig)
Sound wise, the place to spend most effort is the speakers and cabs – that is by far the most in-efficient part of the signal chain, and the place you make most gain from a little effort.
Build the speaker cabs yourself (doesn’t cost a huge amount less, but you can tune them properly, and the efficiency gain is usually fairly big). And start with radiators – you can add folds when you’re upgrading – although by that time you’ll have prob experimented with acoustic coupling (2 speakers driving the same signal in the same box), and will be wanting to build a big rig with coupled boxes…. (most excessive I ever saw in this respect was an old WEM box, wired in cross series/paralell so it ran @ 12ohms, but had 6 drivers in the box…..man that thing was LOUD).
I can give you some good designs for boxes (Thiele-Small ported radiators mostly, although I do have a few fold designs too), and suggested speaker/amp pairings for them…
PM me if you want them, and I’ll sort getting them back into electronic format and send them to you. Also if you want me to give you some more in depth advice, work out how much you want to spend, and I’ll be able to tell you what you can realistically do with it….
Oh, and I’m fulll of advice on what to look out for (See some of my other posts in the technical forum – I’m a (mostly retired) sound engineer, and I tend to go off on a soapbox occasionally about the myths surrounding P.A and audio…) The ranting is all free though… Always happy to help the creation of more rigs and more noise….:weee::weee::weee::bounce_fl:bounce_fl

Thats fantastic mate – proper useful information. I’ll pass this onto the more technically minded guy I’m gonna be working on this project with and get back to ya via pm mate. Your a star! Thanks mate!raaa
