Oil isn’t just used to make electricity – it ends up in stuff like plastic packaging etc the use of which can be reduced if people put their minds to it..
the dungeness train loaded up with all sorts of radioactive stuff probably rolls quite near to you….
yeah id think it probbaly does but its gone to far now, we have no other choice, id let them store nucleur waste into my living room if it meant they stoped using fossil feuls

OK if Sizewell (the one round this way) blew it would “only” kill about 1500 but then you have a cloud of contamination which will slowly finish off most of Suffolk and North Essex.
there’s still a fair bit of coal left, this can still be found in Britain! Yes there is some pollution but not as much as what there used to be, modern coal fired stations in Britain are subject to strict control you could store coal in your living room (actually people did, and I expect up north some still do) and it would be perfectly safe…
The bulk of fossil fuel pollution isn’t from electricity generation anyway, its from transport and aviation. This can be combated by people changing their consumption patterns (even getting more stuff locally), its already happening behind the scenes in a lot of places.

February 8, 2008 at 12:35 am #1154751Are they insane? Fair enough, have strict laws, but you can’t imprison someone for a spec of dirt.

My local shop will try and give me a bag for any amount that I buy and I have to tell them every time that I don’t want/need one. They even give me a bag if I buy a loaf of bread….. It’s in a bloody bag in the first place FFS!

If people want to act like backward puritans out there there are plenty of other more welcoming places you can visit.
This applies whether its Abu Dhabi or Colchester….

February 8, 2008 at 12:30 pm #1154768true very true………supposedly my friend from the phillipines said that if you get caught with any ammount of weed, the sentences are much much harsher, 10+ plus.

A lot of the SE Asian attitude to drugs is to do with a mindset which arrived post-colonial days when the natives felt that their former imperial powers were serving up drugs to keep their population from rising up against the imperial powers. things are unlikely to change there for about 10-20 years (although China is suprisingly lenient (at least for personal users) for that part of the world).

February 8, 2008 at 1:39 pm #1154769doesn’t sound fair, getting jail time for what could be ‘accidential’ misunderstanding, like i said, i could walk on a speck of weed, fall on the bottom of my shoe, walk through the airport……………and get jailed for it.

February 8, 2008 at 2:01 pm #1154747it isn’t fair but they’ve got money and power due to oil so they can essentially do what they want in their country.
The wider problem is the current worldwide consensus that drug use should remain illegal. Countries can get away with this as no one even in the West with any real power is willing to stand up and say that these people haven’t committed a crime. All they can say is that the penalties are excessive.
As for Grooverider, I bet Scotland Yard are rubbing their hands with glee.
They have been wanting to fuck him over since 1989… -
