can anyone help?//???
are brass monkeys related to superstition in anyway??????November 1, 2004 at 5:58 pm #1062938Anonymousapparently, according to the man they call stiv, BRASS MONKEYS were the things that held cannon balls on ships… when the weather got cold, coz brass is a crap alloy, the cannon balls used to be released or “dropped” by the brass monkeys, hence cold weather is “brassmonkey weather”
TADAAAAAAA!!!!November 2, 2004 at 11:28 am #1062936AnonymousIts fucking brass monkeys in edinburgh, i tell thee!
November 2, 2004 at 1:00 pm #1062939fanks 4 your replies guys, I was all ready aware of the freeze the balls off a brass monkey saying, but was interested to know if Brass Monkeys had any magical powers…..???? my g/friend owns a pair of Brass Monkeys and at about 2am on Saturday the little buggers were doing some strange shi*, this was witnessed by everyone in the room. The eyes on both of the monkeys were sparkling really brightly and the light was reflecting all around the room. The eyes normally don’t sparkle, plus the room was quite dark….so as you can imagine this was quite freeky !!! Does anyone know what stone the eyes are made from or where I can find any more info about them? I’ve tried searching on Google for more info but can’t really find anything.
November 2, 2004 at 1:53 pm #1062937the only google info I got (apart from the cold weather superstition) is related to a popular brand of (under)pants – and triggers the blocking software here!
I am part Chinese and have a number of books about Chinese horoscopes and supersitions; whilst monkeys are seen as auspicious animals and statues of them were often put in houses to attract good luck, there is AFAIK no particular superstition attached to statues of them in general.
I suspect these brass monkeys are made in considerable quantity in some Chinese factory, and then sold in “fancy goods stores” worldwide.
The eyes would probably be made from a prismatic plastic or glass material; the strategic placing of reflective materials is encouraged in many schools of Feng Shui to reflect “ch’i” into the correct directions.
Given this occured at 02:00 on a Saturday, I would suspect what happened is (unfortunately) fairly rational; an external light source (such as a car headlight or even an outside security lamp triggered by someone arriving or leaving a building) was shining on to the monkeys’ eyes – and positioned so that whilst it did not light up the room light was reflected by the eyes in a similar way to how reflective road studs (cats eyes) operate.
