BBC Inside Out highlights issues from around Kent and Sussex and brings them to our TV screens for all to see, but it’s not often that national viewers get an inside view of our illegal ‘rave’ scene.
Aired in a seemingly positive light, Inside Out spent some time with the organisers of SWARM Soundsystem discovering “what it’s all about” and the issues surrounding local objection. The episode brings both sides together to discuss the problem.
September 18, 2008 at 5:01 pm #1179653Dont think its particularly good reporting for them to only show a big party with 2000 odd people, no mention of the idea of smaller parties and them maybe being more acceptable to locals. Quite interesting anyway.
September 18, 2008 at 5:10 pm #1179661very interesting – thanks for posting.
They should go along raaayou know they want to now!
shouldn’t have let the cows out though!
September 18, 2008 at 5:40 pm #1179643this happened in the East of England (supposedly sympathetic news reports)
Within a few months parties were being closed down by 3 forces of riot cops
in Kent they will use metpol TSG (the old SPG) as their nearest backup and Essex (lead force megariot 2006)
that said in the East neither side wanted any dialogue with the others, but the only real solution it to get permitted land and an TENS anyway….

Dont know mate, peoples attitudes can change allot over time, and especially over generations. Just look at the idea’s and culture that was prevailent two generations ago, like 1950’s. We are so far away from that now. I think the existence of free parties is enough in itself to have a small impact on culture, in conjunction with other things.

We are so far away from that now.maybe in technical advances, but society can and does go backwards as well as forwards.
For instance less people were racist during the 1980s until the 2000s – it was very uncool to be so – then the economy crashed and a new wave of immigrants were brought in as well as jobs being outsourced, and we had 9/11 and 7/7.
Within a few days 25 years of positive multiculturalism in this country got wiped out – perhaps permanently. I am British Asian and don’t feel overly paranoid, but I feel no more welcome in some settings (including raves in London/SE England) than I did in the early 1980s before “equal opportunities” (some of which now derided by many as “political correctness”)
a year ago there were anti-immigration threads and posts on this forum – something what would have been unthinkable during the dot-com boom days when we first came on line…. On other sites I regularly see openly racist posts from people what claim to be ravers….. in areas where 10 years ago attempts by real, nasty tooled up racists attacking people from ethnic minorities were physically ejected from a party.
its hard to play the “oppressed minority” card when some involved in this culture are prepared to be the oppressors to others..
Quote:I think the existence of free parties is enough in itself to have a small impact on culture, in conjunction with other things.it already did , influenced a lot of “youth media” in the 90s and early 21st century. in 2006 there was a resurgence in publicity about free parties in mainstream media. Shortly afterwards the cops used the biggest show of force in Eastern England to stop a rave in Essex, leading to two years of bitter conflict and the near elimination of parties across Eastern England.
the amount of 30 something ravers what have had some kind of mental health issue due to excessive drugs and caused pain to their families (including their own kids) or extra burden to the NHS and society has also fuelled the backlash… people don’t forgive and forget stuff like that easily (and should they?)
if they are not to make the same mistakes again, the current generation need to clean things up a bit (including unfortunately undoing the damage my generation did) before they can start shouting about their activities on the mainstream media.
September 21, 2008 at 9:47 pm #1179659That were a pretty good video actually it werent biased or owt. I’d love to have a talk with all the people who object to all our kinda stuff!
September 21, 2008 at 9:56 pm #1179641Anonymousfuck the media, mind control for the masses, needs burnin down. sell outs for talkin to em.
September 21, 2008 at 10:06 pm #1179648– its been said by Johnny Rotten 1975 :weee:
September 21, 2008 at 10:16 pm #1179645in the early 2000s Pulse8 from Essex did the same thing
they were equally charismatic and “media friendly”
ended up with Essex being the first East Anglian county to go full zero tolerance even back then and one of the promoters being one of the very few rave promoters to do prison time for a party and cops there haven’t backed down one bit as 2006 showed
its like saying “Hey mr reporter! I robbed this whole load of stuff from various companies, but its OK because I gave most of it to my friends and my nan!” and (even if you didn’t get nicked) not expecting the people from where you robbed the stuff to remember your face for next time…

When its happened its because the local crews have overused their venues or pissed off the locals one time too often.
Bear in mind down South the land is more valuable for growing stuff on so its easy to fuck up important bits of a farm (particularly trampling crops or damaging fences so livestock escape) if people don’t know what they are doing
September 21, 2008 at 10:37 pm #1179650yeah makes sense i see…

October 27, 2008 at 8:58 pm #1179662Good to see this has been circulating amongst the forums, but I wish you hadn’t copied word for word my description of the episode posted to our ‘posted items’ of the Weekend Warrior party group on Facebook. :annoyed: Please, try to be a bit more creative.
On another note, I’ve invited Inside Out to come along to our next party where we take it inside for the launch of Brighton’s winter indoor party scene.
Freeparties, club nights, screenings and other events in and around Brighton UK:
Peace
