the events were before our time for most of us (wasn’t even born then) but what do you all make of this?

      http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/essex/6938147.stm

it might seem like all “jolly good memories” on first glance but to me it seems like the BBC is actually gloating about how the authorities took control in the end…

Well I was around then, altho I wasnt very old ( not like now). Up until about 1967 or 8 there were 3 radio programs.
The “light program” now radio 2 , the “home service” now radio 4 and the “third programme ” which is now radio 3. There was no music for youth culture at all. As the light programme was playing “Mantovani and his orchestra” you had to tune in to Radio Luxembourg 208MW, to listen to “pop” music , but this only worked after dark due to reception problems . So there were various Pirate radio stations set up in the channel, Radio Caroline , Radio free London and others. There was only a 2 mile territorial waters then so they claimed to be operating outside british waters. Of course the Government didnt agree and set up the Marine offences act, which gave them powers to commandeer ships , confiscate transmitters and so on. So basically nothing has changed in 40 years , now its trucks not ships , rigs not transmitters, but still the same old shite as ever. Now it all seems a bit of a joke, a long time ago, but then it all seemed very serious.
Tony Blackburn who won that I’m a celebrity thing on the TV was one of the pirate DJ’s now he’s an establishment figure, so maybe it can all change? After Radio one was set up all the pirate DJ’s came and worked for the BBC. To find out more look up radio caroline on wikipedia.

Hey how do you do these avatars???

I’ve been involved with more recent pirate stations myself (in the 90s) and a few legal ones and I’ve read a few of the books about that time

IMO it was very serious, same as things got serious with pirate stations here in the 80s/90s. it started out fun but in both cases without regulation the gangsters sort of took over and things got heavy (some of my mates who did land-based pirates have had transmitters stolen, others have had worse things happen)

yes, but IMO it gets commerciallised, regulated and diluted but maybe its our own fault as well as the system as people seem repeatedly unable to self-regulate and share resources without fighting bitterly over them.

did think the BBC was gloating a bit about how they took over but that was my perception of their show. I was just curious about it because I now live not far away from the location of the ships..

there should be a link marked “user CP” at the top of the page below the thread title. Click on this and then “Edit Avatar”, be aware though if you want a custom one from your own PC rather than the built in ones the software is fussy about dimensions/sizes.
