October 18, 2007 at 11:03 pm #1123089even in well travelled places, there will be two places to stay right next to each other, one will be packed full of sheep and the other will be struggling to feed themselves, because one has a recommendation
in some cases restaurants / hotels / attractions lay on loads for the writers, but treat their regular customers like shit… i lived on the roof a hostel in the palestinian ghetto of Tel Aviv for a while. it was a health / fire hazard from hell. rough guide were put up in an apartment in central tel aviv and waited on hand and foot by the owner for a week
stuff goes out of date long before it comes to print
in one guide i saw for argentina it actually said “look out for holes in the ground”… :you_crazy what it should have said was “if you are so stupid that you need a book to tell you to not fall in a hole, don’t leave your house”
the entire lonely planet / rough guides to the whole continent of latin america are about 800 pages long. 800 pages too long IMO, but how can you fit 20 countries into 40 pages?
anywhere you go, speak to people, go to tourist information, ask the person you are staying with, it will be much more interesting
these books were good once upon a time, when they were written by enthusiasts, but now it’s all contracted piece work and they are crap

although i dont wanna go by a shitty guidebook, i’d love to talk to people about different places, the real travellers tho i mean

October 18, 2007 at 11:33 pm #1123090sorry, no i don’t. i think people who live the life would be likely to avoid it anyway. word of mouth is always best 😉
actually, as much as i slate all the guide books, they sometimes have some good historical / cultural context bits at the beginning that can inspire you to find out more about a culture / country / language before you go
the CIA website is also surprisingly informative

October 22, 2007 at 4:04 am #1123096yep, it is a great book. Much better than the film. The characters are a lot different and also so is the plot.
For those going traveling, I recomend reading a bit of lonely planet, but just to get an idea of the place where ya going. When you get to where ever ya going, chat to the locals and other travelers for recomendation and most importantly, what to avoid.

Going back on yourself here hey fella?
No I know exactly what you mean. I know of places that give LP a backhander just so they can be in their book. I find LP’s recommendations are okay for the first couple of nights and then ‘word of mouth’ is always the best route.October 22, 2007 at 1:39 pm #1143995globalloon wrote:sorry, no i don’t. i think people who live the life would be likely to avoid it anyway. word of mouth is always best 😉actually, as much as i slate all the guide books, they sometimes have some good historical / cultural context bits at the beginning that can inspire you to find out more about a culture / country / language before you go
