Minimal Tech is the way really…min house brilliant, but the former was the original EDM genre that took on the stripped down characteristics…plastikman imo being the key catalyst.

older people would have called it “Detroit techno” although of course much more now also comes out of Europe… its actually a genre I grew up with but forgot about as so many diferent ones seem to emerge – I can see why Germans like it as they take sound engineering very seriously and have done so for decades 😉

this is aphex twin’s ‘tha’, apparently the first known minimalist track. to me it’s ambient through and through just like all of his SAW material! second track is xtal, clearly ambient and i think tha is too. either way it don’t really matter.

BTW until the mid 1990s there wasn’t that much distinction between genres – you’d have “rave” rooms (the BPMs of the tracks in which tended to increase proportionally with the amount of MDA or dexamfetamine in the pills :wink:), maybe a more “housey” room and sometimes ambient/chillout rooms (if you look at the articles about the club gil (who is my age also) mentioned this explains it).
In reality you only get that level of beard-stroking in metropolitan city areas where sufficient EDM events are licensed to split them across genres – we used to take the piss out of beard strokers in Reading in the 90s (especially when for some reason there was a great rise in the growing of beards other amongst those who needed them for faith groups). They did their uses – many encouraged good sound quality, also it made it harder for CID to infilltrate EDM events as they tended to grow the “wrong sort of beard or moustache” (i.e more military or nautical ones which identified them as feds).
Even in Ipswich until the clampdowns you’d hear everything from funky house/electro to drum and bass in the same night….

I guess I must be listening to minimal a lot. On my Island, hitchhiking is a regular way to get around – I used to travel that way myself 20 years ago – nowadays, the hitchhikers I pick up in my car or my truck often praise the music, and refer to it as minimal.

Is quite a popular underground genre really, been gaining momentum steadily all over. The italians & germans are particularly good at it..mind you i’ve heard some fantastic minimal/latin tech from south america i.e. Alex young. & some really interesting stuff from Japan guy called Harayuki Yokohama…
And of course although he was born in UK, Richie Hawtin Pretty much grew up in Canada going between Windsor/detroit…he was one of the few whom started the stripped down tech style.

pan pot make really dark minimal and they are a massive name, listen to this song very odd and very much like dark ambient to me…. trances you out as well.
listen to about 2 min 30 on loud and you’ll hear some fucking odd minimalist tuneage from pan pot.
a pan pot remix got me into minimal, i was listening to radio 1 at 4am and it was in new djs we trust doing a minimal tech set, i think it was 2006 and i was like wow… this sounds fucking amazing. i’ll link the song which got me into it.
