I think there is a real difference between a ‘free party’ and an ‘illegal rave’ but apparently some people think they are exactly the same thing

January 25, 2008 at 10:52 am #1153482personally i think the term illegal rave is used more by the papers when they are reporting about a party that has gone wrong or got busted. It just sounds worse than free party. it would probably be in capitols as well if the sun had anything to do with it, like
‘an ILLEGAL RAVE in a remote place caused a slight nuisance to HONEST TAX PAYERS’

January 25, 2008 at 1:16 pm #1153485hmmm gotta be honest i’ve always associated them with the same thing
weidly if i say illegal rave i imagine an indoor rave, squat or warehouse etc.
and free party i imagine an outdoor one
but i always used both terms for the same thing

January 25, 2008 at 1:38 pm #1153480in East Anglia the terms are used interchangeably
unfortunately its does also seem that a lot of people attending do now enjoy the “law breaking ” element of these things, not just the “Robin Hood” element but the more criminal side as well..

January 25, 2008 at 2:18 pm #1153486I think most people consider them to be the same things, however i don’t like calling em illegal parties as i don’t see anything illegal bout em so i usually use the term ‘Free party’.
And Djprocess you got it spot on there mate:wink:January 25, 2008 at 2:18 pm #1210406I think most people consider them to be the same things, however i don’t like calling em illegal parties as i don’t see anything illegal bout em so i usually use the term ‘Free party’.

January 25, 2008 at 6:28 pm #1153484Hmm – it seems my use of language has drifted from the norm again :laugh_at::crazy_fre
To me a free party is one where the police do not turn up [most of the parties I go to never get visited by the police at all].
An illegal rave is one which is causing some kind of nuisance and gets told to shut down. It also covers [for me] an event which has been publicly advertised [flyers, internet, etc] as these constitue a violation of the PEL legislation. Basically an event which has come to the attention of the authorities and annoyed them in whatever way.

January 25, 2008 at 6:44 pm #1153481TBH I think one reason for the crossover in terms (particularly here in Suffolk/Essex area) is that pretty much all parties in recent times have annoyed the authorities and are thus treated as illegal, yet many people are defiant at least until they start losing kit more than once and/or go to jail
Even then sentences aren’t that long and rigs are replaced by selling drugs so In other words people no longer feel any shame in doing illegal…
