there was some right ropey old “uncle werthers” type OAPs who would buy 1000s of cheap fags, probably smoking away their guilt wondering whether their lungs would give out or the knock on the door would come

would queue up outside the shop before it opened like crackheads waiting for their fix, clutching their daily mail and looking with pure anger and hate at the security guard (7 foot tall black guy who was also bouncer for every local club but who looked visibly worried at what these codgers were capable of)

don’t feel any sympathy for them, as you say its their decision to smoke

Personally Id tell em no. Although when I was underage I smoked since I was 14 till about 17, around 15 a day. If I still smoked now I probably would, because Im sorry to offend any smokers, but you deny alot of facts to yourself about smoking, and how It affects you and others. So In your deluded mind giving kiddies fags aint so bad 😉 I can say this cos I have smoked. Not that long I know, but long enough to “be” a smoker, and to have the mind set of a smoker. You know, hating the ciggy warning adverts, people that moan about their and your health ect.

However, now I dont smoke I see it all now. Fucking filthy useless habit. It could be argued that I do alot of drugs. And yeah, this Is true, but these actually do something, and most drugs used sensibly dont cause anywhere near as much damage to your body. Also, me talking Es doesnt give people passive comedowns ya know…

I think you are right that kids will get fags from just someone else anyway, but I suppose If everyone thought this, they are going to just buy em them. It should be difficult for under 18s to buy fags. They are a right load of wank. I would prefer to buy kids beer. At least they are having fun with this and experiencing things, like learning their limits, teaching themselves to be responsible ect. Fags do fuck all apart from make you wheeze and cough shit up all the time. Now ive quit smoking for ages, I dont even think about fags when Im stressed. I use my own will power to sort me self out, not aiming for some placebo to “chill me out”. With every other thought being “I need a fag”.

I am so glad I quit, feel loads better all the time. Not as tired and lethargic, don’t cough and wheeze (And I got asthma too). And I noticed after a while after I quit; I dont smell like fucking shit. Smokers smell so bad Its unreal. And you dont realise. I never did. I can smell smokers and fags a mile off, and its horrible. It makes your teeth yellow, and your fingers if you smoked rollies like me, filters or not.

Did I mention I save loads of time a week, and about £20 in baccy! Thats a crate of John Smiths to me lol.

Please no one come back with the cliche counter argument of “well you drink beer, what’s the difference?”. I mentioned briefly above, but there is a huge difference, and the 2 cannot be compared. Just like you cant compare drug with smoking and with alcohol. Infact, each drug itself has a different set of situations and circumstances that make them pretty much completely different subjects.

Smoking is wank and I wish everyone would see it.

There is another problem with taxes too. Thats nothing to do with the problem with smoking as such, but it is a bi-problem if there is such a word, and shouldn’t be used as an argument in this debate… If I had my way though, some drugs would be legal, and they could share the tax out on them fuckers If they wanted…

I know so many people will instantly react to this post and label it preaching, and a load of bollocks and probably not even read it all, or just dismay it. But seriously, from an ex-smokers point of view (albeit, only a 3 year smoker), smoking is absolute shite and you will feel soooo much better all around If you quit, I promise. :group_hug

I have just had an Idea. First I will give you some background Info though.

I quit smoking pretty unwillingly. I was 17, jobless and was spending me small amounts of dollar on weekends out. I also kinda lost it for about a year or 2 without going into details, and couldn’t even visit shops to buy It if I had money. The only fags I got were If my mates went to the shop for me, or If I sponged them off my mates and my mum.

Because of this, obviously Im not going to be getting 15 a day. It was a gradual thing. I would start becoming tight with my rollies, knowing I was short on cash. Also, after months of this, you obviously dont want to be sponging constantly, for your own dignity at least…

With all this in mind, weather I liked It or not, I was slowly cutting down. It was tough, yeah, but I literally had no choice. I had those days where I would literally turn my room upside down, and the rest of the house looking for fags or sometimes even dog ends (butts, whatever ya call em down your ends 🙂 )

Eventually I had come so far, I thought, fuck it; I might aswell quit while Im down to so little a day. So I carried It on and didnt smoke and eventually quit, and just had the odd one on the weekend up until a year afterwards where I would refuse one all together.

Now im telling you this because its kinda relevant to my Idea. If this helped me to quit, maybe It could be adapted to help others.

My thoughts were, that maybe there could be a government scheme where everyone that applied for one, would receive maybe some sort of ID number on an ID card, that allowed them to buy fags. Now these would be one per person, and would be photo ID in the Ideal world. Maybe for this people would pay the production cost, which I would guess would be less then £3.

Now, the point of these would be, that If a person wanted to quit, they would put their ID number on a cut down or quit schedule. They would ring up, go online or whatever Is cheapest, and select an option so that their ID number would only be allowed so many fags per week. This would be an agreement from yourself to cut down, forcibly making yourself quit, and helping with temptation…

I thought of some counter arguments and solutions too, also a few extra pros.

Pro: None smokers would literally be unable to buy kiddies or other smokers fags. especially helping to counter people asking their partners and friends to buy fags for them.

Problem: People ask their smoking mates to buy them
Solution: Even smokers who wish to carry on smoking would have to complete a form online/leaflet/phone line and select how many fags they want to be able to buy. So A normal person would select like 200 or whatever, and the baccy equivalent.

Problem: People who smoke and intend to buy fags for their mates will put a stupidly high limit on their fag allowance.
Solution: There is none here, but I think this Idea as a whole would narrow this down alot, and although alot of people will cheat, I think more would benefit.

Problem: People who have chosen a cut down on their ID profile, will just up it for the week after when they start wanting to smoke again whilst recently starting to give up (relapse for lack of a better word).
Solution: Give some sort of time limit on when people can change their smoking allowance. Maybe 2 weeks or a month. I suppose that would have to be more deeply analysed, to find a suitable time period.

BIG Pro: Also with kids in mind, and them getting other people to buy them ciggies, there are 2 main reasons why they cant easily get fags…

1: They dont have an ID to buy themselves, they aren’t old enough of course.
2: If someone sets themselves 200 fags a week, you aren’t going to waste them on some 15 yr old that wants 20 L & B, weather you want to buy them some or not!

I do think people need to want to quit to quit. But there are a huge amount of people who want to quit, but cant. Through a stressful life or whatever. Sometimes you wish that you could get a kick up the arse to help you stay on course of cutting down, or your chosen quitting method.

What I like about my Idea is that It helps people, without being a dictatorship Idea. Whereas other Ideas about banning and what not, dont give people the choice. This avoids stubborn people deliberately going against bans by carrying on, rain or not.

Dom: The concern I’d have is about the extra ID card. Freedom isn’t carrying around an ID card with you just so you can smoke… I don’t think people need that much help anyway, it isn’t impossible!
