Cool!
Thanks!Well I’ll just do my usual trick of babbling along until I say something so stupid everyone hates me! 🙂

BioTech wrote:Yeah, round buying is a tricky one.Okay here is the one that screws me every time –
You go to the pub with your good mate.
You have a vague memory that the last time you went to the pub together he bought a few more rounds than you. So you think this time you should obviously start.
You say “Can I get you a drink?”
There’s a weird, awkward pause. And then your mate says “Oh let me get this one!”
At this point, I’m screwed. Because sometimes I say “Really?? I could get it.”
And then the person just goes off and buys the drink anyway.
And sometimes I say “Oh, okay then.” But I kinda’ feel there’s still an imbalance.
As it is, I am always totally surprised by the counter offer and never expect it coming.
The worst case of this was when we had agreed I’d order the drinks.
I ordered the drinks. I started to reach out with my hand to give the barman the money, but then at the LAST SECOND and with lightning speed, completely unannounced, my friend thrust a 10 pound note into the bar man’s hand, paying for the drink. There had been no debate about who was paying beforehand.
Yeah, this whole, Round Gazumping, confuses me!

BioTech wrote::laugh_at: :laugh_at: :laugh_at: :laugh_at:Three true stories about this –
Okay so the very first time I came to England, I’d never left the country before, I was SOOOO naive.
I was travelling around the country, meeting people at random, and then sleeping on their couches, spare beds, in their car, where ever.
Anyway I got hooked up with these two cool dudes, Lee and Dave.
And we went to the pub. I was totally dirt broke and these dudes
kept buying me round after round and I was thinking –“WOW! These guys are so cool to keep buying me drinks, cause they KNOW I’M DIRT POOR! I love the ENGLISH!”
Eventually Lee threatened to shiv me, and that’s how I found out about round buying.
But it was a crowded pub, so I needed to get the bartenders attention right? Like you would back in California. Obviously wave and make yourself plainly visible right?? Oh that’s not working. Mmm maybe I should wave my money in the air????
So there’s me not being served!
Anyway, sometime later I was at a pub with this dude Jamie.
And I know all about the round buying stuff, so I offer him a round.
I go up, and politely wait at the bar not making an ass of myself or even acting remotely interested in being served — which seems to do the trick.
“Can I have a Stella and an Old Rosie?”
The bartender goes off, starts pouring. Then Jamie launches into me –
“YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO SAY PLEASE! May I have a Stella and an Old Rosie PLEASE!”
And I was sheepish and said “Oh sorry. I thought I was being polite cause I said ‘Can I’. That’s polite in California.”
And no one seemed impressed.
Then a random dude yelled out “Don’t worry mate! If they’re SO AMERICAN, EXPECT A HUGE TIP!”
And the whole place burst out laughing.
I was so embarrassed I apologised AGAIN and gave the bartender a 20% tip.
I recently found out you AREN’T supposed to tip barmen, but offer them a drink instead.
ARGH!!!!!
I need to do a doctorate in this pub stuff!
life-time supply of kindereggs
BioTech wrote::weee: :weee: Haha… strange how that makes me feel quite affectionate for the little old place. The thing is, the big things, you expect those to be different.
You’re prepared for the government, the employment laws, the health care system, to all be different.
So what screws you everytime is the little stuff you take for granted.
So the first time you encounter a box of UHD milk, or the first time someone says “Happy Christmas!”, or the first time you learn there’s a complex system of pub etiquette which you have now completely blown,
etc. etcIt’s kind of like being on a parallel earth.
Everyone is still speaking the same language as you – pretty much.
Cars are still the same – pretty much.
You need to get a TV licence now, and milk floats still exist.Tiny wee little changes like that make me feel like I’m in slightly different dimension.
elretardo87 wrote:Science is trying too hard to be like religion nowadays.I think science is like a bunch of kids who think they’ve got awesome toys and know better than anyone else.
It has this intense belief that their toys and ideas can measure and describe everything.
There’s no good theory about consciousness. Science doesn’t know where to begin in explaining awareness.
But it has this heady optimism that their awareness, which they don’t understand, will be enough for them to describe EVERYTHING that is or could be.
Imagine finding yourself behind the wheel of a car. You don’t know what kind of car it is or how it runs, but you have total faith you can drive it all the way to India. It could be a brand new state of the art jeep, or it could be a 30 year old clapped out mini without any working indicators or brakes. You have no way to tell.
That’s what science is without an understanding of consciousness.

Going up high than that to the 12th dimension he sees these individual strings linking together to form a membrane.
Actually I’ve never heard a description for dimensions 6 through 10.
Except I think Kaku said he expected they were very small?Quote:whereas 10 dimensions can actually be explained in a clear and logical way. to me 11 and 12 dimensional space are just ways to make equations work that are wrong. what is the test for brane theory? there is none, so its an idea, not a theory.10 dimensional space describes all that has been, could have been, is, and maybe, and might not be. all possibilities are described. brane theory still fits into 10 dimensions. any description you give to the 11th and 12th dimension are covered in the 10th. as i implied in my previous post, until we can calculate the size and mass of the universe everything else is in limbo. mass == energy so if you cant calculate the mass, you cant calculate the energy, and until then you will never get a unifying theory, which m- theory attempts to be .If you accept the 11th and 12th dimensions you can just keep on adding dimensions ad infinitumWell I still don’t know why there CAN’T be an infinite number of dimensions.
10, 11, or 12 might be a good place to stop for the math to be pretty to look at, or for it to still be something the human mind could feebly try to visualise. But why should the universe care about our perceptions?
It could go off and do it’s own thing and leave us never clever enough to figure it out.hedmekanik wrote:To be in Oxford, that is. My all-time favourite band are from there, yip, Radiohead,The Jericho Tavern, YUP!

You’ve got to, y’know? Can’t laze about, hell no.Well hey, if I ever cruise down to South Africa, please let me know where the action is!

Been to the Bully!
Cool place. Haven’t been dancing there in…wow…like 11 months though. You ever go to Baraka? I was definitely thinking of checking that out sometime. I’ve heard it’s a crazy night.

Thanks for the tip!BioTech wrote:I should imagine it would be similar for me if I was to spend any time in houses made out of wood.Houses made of wood and plaster are ace, because with even a LITTLE SKILL you can make undetectable voids and empty spaces, that are impossible to find but easy to access.
I wouldn’t know where to start doing that in these damn houses.
Quote:How long have you been here again?Time is just ZIPPING by, it’s been 2 and a half years.
Quote:It’s definitely not nice when it gets so dark in the winter but we enjoy fairly long daylight hours in the summer.Yeah I like that, sunny at 10pm.
It’s like finding yourself on another planet this place.I have this complex track in my head which was inspired by last winter.
I need to sit down and just do it.Acidfairy wrote:That link at the top works now.. its a stream only link by the way so just click play.. thanksI’m kinda in a mentalist mood, but here’s where I’m going –
FIRST — AWESOME FREAKIN’ TUNE! I’m loving it!
You’re page says you have some gigs in London coming up? Please let me know about that!
And yeah, I can almost HEAR the name “Imhotep” in the music.
Imhotep was also a poet and philosopher. He urged contentment and preached cheerfulness. His proverbs contained a “philosophy of life.” Imhotep coined the saying “Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we shall die.” His name means “the one who comes in peace.”
Anyway, yeah I just heard “Imhotep” in there, and that’s a short weird sweet name.
But I’m 100% certifiable!
🙂I’ll play GTA on my PC and wait until the PS3 is the loser last generation console that Game is desperate to get rid of.
Quote:how are you finding oxford?Oxford has got some great people and of course massively cool/convenient links with London when I get bored with it.
I’m from a city of 2.5 million people, so Oxford feels so…twee and tiny
in comparison.Though buildings made out of stone is kinda’ trippy!
Even brick weirds me out actually.Quote:its definitely a diverse city. the town centre drives me nuts cos of ll the tourists and poncy students toffing it up,Yeah you need to find the hidden away local places.
I live near the train station.
It’s just convenient.
That’s about the only thing that comes to mind about it.Quote:but cowley road area is lovely. actually feels like people live there and like it!Yeah Cowley Road is as alive and chaotic as Oxford gets.
The Zodiac isn’t bad, but it could be a lot better.Quote:and its dead easy to leave, thank god, as the train links are great.Yes indeedy!
I can easily get to wherever I want to go.
Which is a nice change from gridlock traffic jam California, where you
have to drive everywhere which means you can never get properly wasted.God bless public transport! My enabler!
Quote:missing home much?I miss the sun when it gets dark at 3:30pm!
But to be honest, California is a Catch-22.
Sure you get nice weather all year round, but you’ll only enjoy it from
the comfort of your cubicle as your boss yells at you.
My last employer in California told me he was very generous, AND HE WAS,
because he gave me 11 days off a year, when most places only give you 10.Oh and the 10 is just some fictional thing on paper for legal reasons.
If you try to actually TAKE ten days off a year in an American company
you’ll be looked at like a traitor who doesn’t love the company enough. When I heard I’d be getting 30 frickin’ days off a year in my job in
Oxford I just flipped out!!I was beaming for months!!
This may be a cold, damp, dark twisted place — but at least I get to
enjoy it!!I guess mostly I miss my old friends.
But they are coming to visit me soon, so it will be like old times. So wazzup with you?
It was Tejada! I loved his mix of “I’m A Disco Dancer” as well!!
I’ve got to check more of his stuff out!!Thanks!
Hey what is the track at 38:33?
Thanks!
BioTech wrote:I agree to an extent, but as long as they can improve upon GTA and driving games then I’m happy. I use my PC for first person shooters and strategy anyway.Well I love Gran Turismo 4 and GTA.
Hell GTA is worth it for Lazlo alone!!
But yeah if they could offer even more expansive and realistic environments for a magical GTA 4, that would bring me back.
I use so many gaming devices it’s stupid!!
I have my Gameboy SP for when I’m bored and want to play something on a long commute.
I use my Dreamcast for games like Crazy Taxi and Gauntlet Legends.
I use the PS2 for GTA and Gran Turismo, and maybe the Urbz if I want to kill some time.
I absolutely LOVE Civilization on the PC.
Oh and I really miss my Atari 7800 and C64 which I left behind in California.
Oh and there’s that Atari 2600 in my desk at work that I should bring home.
Quote:The Wii looks like something that would be fun to play when your mates are round. The Wii looks like the best choice.
It seems like it will be half the price and eight times the fun.elretardo87 wrote:My sentiments exactly, anyone can continue down the line of modifying the disks to hold more and generally upppin the consoles abillilty….its eben going on since the ps1 came out, and the only innovative thing about that was it used cds instead of cartridges.Yeah. Actually on that note, I own a PS2 and a Dreamcast. And even though the Dreamcast flopped, it has countless fun and creative games.
Whereas the PS2 has a few super awesome titles and then umm….that’s it.GoodDoG wrote:Here is a link to todays show for those that want it http://www.sendspace.com/file/ou9jayraaaraaa
