realistically if its only you involved you would be better off powering the sound system by solar panels (or even cheating and using mains to charge it before you go out, if you feel guilty sign up to ecotricity of something like that :laugh_at:)

As a bicycle dynamo only produces about 3-5W and a bike powered generator normally cannot be used as a bike unless you convert a turbo trainer (pedal PA mention this) and then you need more tat in your trailer and more cyclists to provide the power.

unless you have been training like Chris Hoy, and combining chucking amfet down your neck, and jacking up on roids with binge eating you are not going to be able to pedal a trade bike containing a sound system full of lead acid batteries and heavy speakers and charge it at the same time and then return it to base..

ok maybenot to power it, but a realistic lightweight soundsystem powered by something i can pull on my bike. soundsystem maybe the wrong term tbh, it suggess something big

it’s possible for sure as have seen it done and ran behind single-cycliss pulling a couple of speakers… not sure what the power source was.

this makes me fucking cringe tbh

i’ve had enough of thick single-minded ultra-lefties/anarchist types

it links in with what i was saying other day about the student protest:

“I was on the demonstration and I’m disappointed by the trouble caused. There may well be a time for civil unrest during this government, but today wasn’t it. It’s just undermined the whole thing… the BBC is leading with the riot stories, and it has one picture of the actual march and 9 of the riots. The right-wing media I’d expect to focus on the trouble, but why give them the ammo? There was 52,000 students there today and that would have made headlines on it’s own. Instead actions of 200 people make it easier for the media and politicians to distract from the real issue.

It feels like a missed opportunity to get positive media coverage and gain public support. With that turnout especially.

The SWP can generally get fucked too. Immature politics with no depth or intelligence. I was told the “NUS are in the hands of the politicians, this protest would never have happened without the SWP” (whilst they were on a NUS funded bus), “live interviews on Sky are chosen with selective bias” (relating to interviews at the scene of the trouble), “the police were the only ones being violent” and “there is no difference between Labour and the Tories”.

Pathetic bunch of fools, they hijack everything, it’s their methods I despise more than anything, look what UAF has become.”

        re: SWP types basically.

“GL and I may seem cynical but, to get it in context, we are still here trying to help you guys because we believe it can be better than it is and that access to our experience may be crucial to you doing better than our peers did. “

Just to clear up – my opinions on GL’s views and the pessimism/negative/cynical accusations were based not on drugs or parties, but wider social issues as a whole. For me parties are pretty irrelevant now, and drugs certainly are. I go to parties and take drugs cos I enjoy it and it’s hedonism, not wreckless hedonism these days but it’s aim is certainly solely pleasure. My opinions on social change are nothing to do with this, or the work I do to reflect these opinions.

Anyway, I’m in Bangkok at the moment. It’s not my thing at all, but my guesthouse was nice and I’m getting a bus and boat to Siem Reap tomorrow, when I get out of Bangkok I’d like to think the travelling begins. 🙂

Raves and drugs were and are in fact a complete distraction from this, I’m not a big conspiracy theorist but in hindsight I do sometimes wonder if that was why Thatcho, Major didn’t crush them totally when they in fact had the resources to do so in the 1990s, and Blair initially tolerated the music/drugs culture!

I think things are getting better though, I don’t know if this is because I’m in a different area to you, but most of my friends do both activism and partying. Many don’t do any activism but still hold the opinions and support the activists on major things.

I do actually agree things have got better even in the last 25 years and definitely the last 100 years but the issue is things are backsliding with the advent of environmental and resource depletion.

I think progression always does this a bit though. Thatcher was a regression socially, but even when it regresses, it’s always progressing overall. And it’s not linear either, some things improve whilst others regress, I’d still say on balance it always works out that it’s pushing for the better overall.

                    Quote:
Everyoneis happy and optimistic when there are abundant resources (money / food / energy ) but there is a lot of contention over even “right-on” people changing their lifestyles. in fact one reason I don’t party any more is because the scene has shifted up North and to London and I refuse to put another car on the road or make non-essential journeys to save energy!

I agree that people don’t want to change their lifestyle. I drive, admittedly I drive for work purposes at the moment and don’t own my own car, but I can’t pretend there haven’t been journeys where I could have used public transport. I think train prices need to be reduced massively though. It costs me £8 to go from York to Leeds. That’s a 24 minute train journey. And as they don’t do return fares (too short a distance apparently!) to go to see my parents or mates in York for one night, it costs me £16 with a railcard. Petrol it’s about a fiver there and back. Now I use the train or bus when I go home, I don’t have my own car, but I can see why people do use the car between those cities. That’s maybe people being a little bit selfish, I would be less judgmental on them tbh, I believe incentives need to be given to expect people to use public transport, more money pumped into the transport system, make the rail network an efficient, cheaper alternative and people will switch. If it means people are taxed more then so be it.

                    Quote:
lots of people support Amnesty or buy fair trade food. How many will actually give up a second car and ride a bicycle, or much importantly delay starting a family or even choose not to have kids to reduce their impact on the world?

But the two things aren’t mutually exclusive. So OK, they have a second car, but that doesn’t mean it invalidates the fact they make an effort to buy fair trade, isn’t that one aspect of progress at least? You have recognised there is a change in mentality here, and it’s a good example – supermarkets stock more fair trade, most major coffee shops now only stock fair trade, it’s a positive change. You can’t disregard that because an entirely different (for the purposes of this argument, I am aware of the correlation between the issues of environmentalism and global inequality) reason still needs progress itself.

we use it for a drinking game. something more interesting than the traditional card games.

basically, you each take it in turns to click next. if you get a weirdo wanking/anally inserting/whatever, you down your drink. you can do “the weirder, the more drinkage” if you like.

it makes for a funny but sick game.

I know there has been a lot in the media about it, but my opinions come from a mixture of experience and reports on forums of drug users, not the perspective the scaremongering media is coming from.

I would seriously advise anyone who is taking mephedrone regularly to stop, basically. This drug can be used, but it has an pretty high addictive threshold so serious moderation is advised.

I know I sound like I’m preaching but I really don’t mean too, the more I read about mephedrone the more it seriously concerns me. I’ve taken most illegal drugs and a few research chemicals, and have been doing on and off for 5 years or so. The only drug that has ever caused me problems or has become regular is mephedrone.

There are increasing reports of low-level abuse possible causing long-term paranoia and/or anxiety, and as mephedrone is very addictive, this level of abuse is not hard to reach. Little is known about the long-term effects and this generation is the guinea pigs, so we’ll have to wait and see for confirmation, but there are closely-related drugs that have caused serious long-term problems.

I’m not saying don’t do it, but seriously moderate it and don’t let it become a habit, I’m currently experiencing some serious anxiety issues despite having stopped using it some time ago.

I’m paranoid of sounding like I’m preaching, but I’m just worried about it’s level of use. And the age of some of the people using it. I used drugs at a young age, but thankfully (and through mostly luck rather than my own decision) I used drugs that were tested and effects known about.

at present? thats got nothing to do with it, progression is gradual, so therefore it’s better than nothing.

we’re not going to agree… i think you’re unnecessarily cynical. there are plenty of people a lot older than you who still hold their principles and values and strive for change. pessimism hardly helps anything, does it?

things regress slightly but generally steadily progress, but not thanks to people thinking it’s futile. and i’m not unrealistic thanks, i can easily back-up my idea of progress over the past century.

unfortunately this only happens in poorer countries of the area where society is willing to accept the issues with binge drinking, drug use/dealing and associated crime..

this is true up here, i always wondered why certain places (what i won’t name) remain open cos of their blatant openess about drug use etc. and organised crime associations, well they are in pretty deprived areas.
