Safari Sound

Biography

About twenty years ago, DJ Shirkhan lived in Iran where music was illegal at the time. But no man could stop him from doing his thing – he made sure his Michael Jackson cassettes were properly hidden and started building what would become a huge knowledge of music and an even bigger collection of records. The family eventually moved to Sweden, and that’s where Jamaican music first hit him. He felt no pain and a few years later, he is a full-blooded DJ.

At the same time, Sammy K, age 12 and also a Michael Jackson fan, was busy organizing his first event far from any adults’ knowledge. Well aware of the fact that every man got the right to decide his own destiny, he went on with his business and managed to rent a venue on credit, promising to pay it back with the income from the party’s entrance fees. Despite a small bailout needed for that particular occasion, this was the first in an ongoing series of booming events.

Safari Sound was founded in Malmö, (a.k.a. the Dirty South) in 2003 by DJ Shirkhan. In 2006 Sammy K joined the sound as an MC, making it the dynamic duo that they are known to be today. The sound has established their name as a big contributor to the development of the music scene in Southern Sweden through active involvement on Swedish National Radio, regular mixtape releases and several club concepts such as Original Bangarang© and Gully Creepin©. In 2011, the sound moved to Stockholm where the Gully Creepin© club concept was successfully relaunched. They are also a steady resource to the music lovers through their broadly appreciated mixtapes with themes varying from brand new music and party vibes to love songs and musical tributes.

Quality sound, originality, brand new music and ability to play for any type of crowd has gotten Safari Sound supporters far across the country borders. The sound is frequently touring the Scandinavian countries and Europe, performing at clubs as well as festivals and private parties, and sharing scenes with artists such as Beenie Man, Elephant Man, Wayne Wonder, Konshens, Jah Vinchi, Popcaan, Ward 21, T.O.K, Collie Buddz and Mr Vegas to name a few.

Safari Sound specializes in playing the latest reggae & dancehall, always spicing up the jugglin’ by adding a dose of exclusive dubplates and remixes to their shows. However, when Safari Sound take over the scene, you have to expect the unexpected – You might end up swinging to some 70’s reggae, requesting pull ups when 90´s scorchers get played, headbangin’ to hip hop, whining to soca or any other genres rich on drum and bass.

Today you can catch Safari Sound on the Swedish National Radio stations Din Gata and P3, broadcasting their popular Safari Dancehall Show with hundred thousands of listeners. They also frequently appear as reggae and dancehall columnists in Kingsize Magazine (the biggest hip hop magazine in Scandinavia).
