you are still posh compared to Londoners, I was born and brought up SE London (on the border area where folk support either Millwall, Palace or Woolwich) and irrespective of what team you followed, you couldn’t keep your machete and billhook in the shed (if you could afford to have a shed), as some blighter would nick them, they would be kept in the bedroom or living room as you never know when they might have been needed.

A few years ago I was in a very rural part of Suffolk, getting pissed and high with some blokes who (other than one who had lived in Colchester) had never seen an English Asian before apart from on the telly – the only Asian folk they encountered were some Chinese at a local restaurant, who spoke little English. They totally accepted that it is possible to be both English by birth and culture but of Asian ancestry, and actually had some idea where Malaysia was because of the maritime connections.

I showed them via Google Earth where my Mum and Dad grew up (they were surprised as it just looked like Stowmarket with the heat turned up and thought it would have been in the rural/jungle areas, I explained to them the Malaysian Tourist Board and the BBC show those areas because they are prettier, and its the other half of the country anyway where there aren’t as many people). I showed them my Nan’s current location is in the suburban bit just outside the end of where the big chase scene occurs in KL in the Jackie Chan film Police Story, Penang where Dad grew up, and Singapore where he went to the Catholic 6th form college.

I then showed the area of SE London (New Cross, Deptford, Catford, Lewisham) my parents moved to and I was born in grew up in.

At that point the oldest of the group (about 50+) piped up with this comment.

Good God! How can humans in the 21st century be living in such a crowded place, amongst all that traffic and noisy trains?
