“Winamp.com and associated web services will no longer be available past December 20, 2013. Additionally, Winamp Media players will no longer be available for download. November 21, 2013 at 11:56 am #1276497Milkdrop is an independent project which is open source and can be made to run with foobar2000 and other media players (its not exactly “plug and play” but I managed it and it wasn’t as bad as having to do stuff like work at command line on linux boxes).

thing is like most dot-com companies, they didn’t even that much money out of this fiasco. What happened (and still happens) is that startups are bought simply to get the staff from them and force them into working in normal corporate environments, they basically have conned younger folk in the tech into paying for their own training and apprenticeship and taking on the risks of employing someone which these companies once did.

Nice, I can’t and don’t want to imagine life without milkdrop. It has been the background for many a k-hole while listening to Shpongle!

November 25, 2013 at 10:44 am #1276514Some pretty big news, first it looks as if shoutcast.com is also about to shutdown but both may be bought by Microsoft…
Looks like the llama may not get off so easily after all. AOL yesterday announced that it was shutting down Winamp, media playing software for Windows and Android devices that it picked up through its $80 million acquisition of Nullsoft in 1999. But today Techcrunch has learned that AOL is talks with Microsoft to sell Winamp, along with Shoutcast, a media streaming service also developed by Nullsoft. We have also learned that AOL has been planning to announce the closure of Shoutcast next week.
AOL has declined to comment for this story, and we are still waiting to hear back from Microsoft with a response. From what we understand, the deal is not yet finalized, with AOL and Microsoft still working out the price. It could also be very wishful thinking from those intent on trying to save both services.
AOL did not give any guidance yesterday on what would happen with Shoutcast.
If this is correct, it would represent an interesting, and strange, twist in the story.
On the AOL side, it’s fairly clear why AOL is closing down Winamp and Shoutcast, and it makes sense why it would want to sell both.
As an owner, AOL has never given much of a strong direction to the products, at a time when other digital music companies have been building up audiences and evolving technologies (although, as we pointed out earlier this week when writing about Rdio layoffs, the digital music business is tough). It has already shuttered and sold off other music assets as part of a bigger strategic shift to focus resources as a web publisher (it owns TechCrunch, Engadget, Huffington Post and a number of other bloggy properties), and as a rich-media advertising network operator across those and third-party sites, with an increasing focus on ad-tech to improve how those ads are delivered and measured.
Yes, music properties could very much fit into that mix, but not without a lot of financial and strategic investment in them.
On the Microsoft side, the Windows giant has had its own setbacks in music (RIP Zune). But it has more recently thrown a lot of eggs into the Xbox Music basket, which works on the Xbox 360, Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows Phone 8,iOS and Android devices, offering free, ad-supported streaming, subscriptions, and downloaded music.
Where would Winamp or Shoutcast fit into that mix? While I’m still trying to figure out what Microsoft would do with Winamp, Shoutcast has a platform that acts as a portal to over 50,000 radio stations. This could be one area that Microsoft might want to add to the Xbox Music platform, and which it currently lacks, to complement its Pandora-style personal radio feature.
Update: Microsoft has declined to comment for this story.
November 25, 2013 at 7:54 pm #1276515It will be interesting to see what Microsoft are willing to pay for these websites if the do buy them. AOL originally bought Nullsoft for 80 million dollars. But I suspect that in today’s crazy money economy where an app like Snapchat can turn down an offer of 3 Billion dollars from Facebook as insufficient that they will probably pay in excess of a Billion dollars and AOL will make a big profit…

November 26, 2013 at 1:03 pm #1276499there is no real proof that the offer of that amount was made, other than from the director of the company who would want to talk up his share price. The youth protection / security features of Snapchat and similar apps have been quickly hacked and overpowered by its young users, as have any others put in to social networks used by youngsters, in my region the Police working with researchers at Adastral Park now give internet safety advice to both youths and adults and basically say “if you don’t want it to haunt you in 20 years time, just don’t put it online”. As it stands there’s a whole division of Suffolk Constabulary now devoted to sorting out online bullying, fraud and crime (its expanded from the small team of cops that once used to scan here every weekend looking for illegal rave info which they were never going to find anyway as it wasn’t there to start with!)
Microsoft online services are losing money hand over fist, and MS itself is only just keeping afloat due to corporate use of Windows servers and desktops. I doubt if they will pay a great deal for Shoutcast, if they do at all – in reality internet radio is very good for specialist music shows but these are precisely the kind of content creators who will not tolerate such things as being forced to stop their stream every hour for ads to be played out from a foreign country and as European nations treat online broadcasters the same as traditional ones such a practice might not be legal.
A lot of things that US internet companies do for marketing purposes would result in a breach of EU privacy laws!

Not sure what the future plans are, I hope they have the sense to release that EDM stations are a specialist subset of radio which cannot be forced into the traditional operational methods of close working with artist management and copyright holders, and that live DJ’s and presenters will really struggle to cope with ad content being transmitted across their show!
