British heavy metal guitarist Christian Fagg drowns on camping holiday in Germany – Mirror Online
Quote:guitarist described by friends as “one of the UK’s brightest musicians” has drowned on a camping holiday in Germany.
Non-swimmer Christian Fagg, 23, is thought to have been racing a friend on foot through shallow water on the Rhine when he was swept away.
His body was recovered four miles away yesterday after being spotted by people on a houseboat.
Before police confirmed Christian was dead his stepdad Kevin Smith said: “Christian is very popular and we are a very close family.
“His mum Julie has obviously not taken the news well.”
Tesco worker Christian, from Cleethorpes, Lincs, played bass in metal band Trollkraft.
He and bandmate Tomas Drury were staying at a campsite in Cologne with friends when the tragedy happened on Monday.
They had recently been on tour.
His bandmates sent a message to fans on Facebook which said: “The world just got a little bit quieter” after the death of the “all-round good bloke”.
And they added: “Please, smash a tune on and crack open a beer for one of the UK’s brightest musicians.”
Christian’s grieving girlfriend Rachel Muir posted: “Crying is good! He will be sorely missed.”Check out all the latest News, Sport & Celeb gossip at Mirror.co.uk British heavy metal guitarist Christian Fagg drowns on camping holiday in Germany – Mirror Online

I agree that the title of this thread was a little misleading; and the actual content rather disappointing. I don’t fully understand how a human can be a non-swimmer, it isn’t even really a learnt skill, more of an instinct. Plus he was from Grimsby so it’s not like he’s never seen water in it’s natural environment before.
August 9, 2013 at 10:01 pm #1275253Well some people panic and sink I spoze. I will never get over this video I saw once with a newly wed couple filming themselves taking a dip in a lake in yemen. One second they are fine and the next minute there is an almighty struggle. The next minute it looks as though they are trying to swim back the couple of metres back to shore. Then the womans head goes under and doesn’t come back up while the guy is still struggling. Then with a final scream he sinks never to come back up. I used to think the video was fake until I saw a video of the bodies being recovered. The video is on youtube if you care to see it but be warned I wish I had never seen it. I’m not really one for gore videos. They tend to stay in my head for a long time. I don’t know if everyone feels the same as me after but I don’t think it’s health to watch people dying.

August 10, 2013 at 4:17 am #1275256Oh right. Some cunt who can spin a couple vinyl records in time, it’s a disaster if they drown.
An axehead who spent years learning his craft and was widely regarded as the best… subhuman, why give a shit, wouldn’t have even noticed if he didn’t have a similar name.

You assume I would have greater sympathy if they were an EDM performer/artist? Please tell me how you arrived at this conclusion Pat. The truth is I don’t know this guy and the loss of his life has zero impact on my own. You could say that sounds very twatish; but then I could say am I suppose feign emotion where there is none? I’d be quite the emotional wreck if I allowed every death I ever heard of get to me.
You could then say I’m a tit for being so disrespectful, but why respect the dead? To me that is a futile task that only serves to make the living feel better, the dead don’t benefit from it. Personally if someone has earned my respect I will respect them while they are alive. That is the way I expect to be treated so it is the way I treat others.

I’m not saying he shouldn’t have drowned or it could have been prevented. I was just making a slightly off topic comment. I won’t go into it as I’ll probably just upset people.
RIP Christian

Well, no, I assumed people might actually laugh and cry at the same time. I was guessing multitasking polymaths capable of laughing and crying at the same time were common in these parts, that was my (wrong) assumption.

August 10, 2013 at 9:26 pm #1275248TBH even an Olympic level swimmer can be caught out by a strong current/undertow at the wrong time/place. every few days on 112 nederland site there are reports of unfortunate people drowning in various ways in spite of the Dutch having very good swimming and water safety tuition from primary school age. They get taught to swim around the same time they learn to ride a bicycle (which makes even more sense given that especially in Amsterdam it is worryingly easy to end up having to do both if you are not careful where you are going.)
