Hi there just wanting a fairly simple set up for a couple of house party’s were going to have. Just wondering what hardware & software we’d need to have a audio signal affect/modulate some visuals for projection. Cheers 🙂
April 1, 2013 at 8:43 pm #1270863Haven’t touched any of that for about 13 years… will have a trawl of info sites and get back to you. Give me 24 hours or so.
I have a feeling it’s just a fairly decent PC or laptop with a mic input and the right freeware/shareware program running, but I could well be wrong on that.
If you want continuous mixing, then you need a video mixer and 2 sources of visuals… just like a continuous music stream needs 2 turntables (or similar) and a mixer.
April 1, 2013 at 8:47 pm #1270870hi there thanks for the quick response!
I’ll be running a audio cable out of my Xone62 mixer into a soundcard.
As for the visuals, it’ll be more of a set it going and leave it job, so probably a long trippy video on a loop but to add variety just wanted it affected my the music. if thats possible 🙂April 1, 2013 at 8:47 pm #1270860I’ve used G-Force in the past. You can run it as a standalone player and tell it to listen to the laptop mic/line input (or an external soundcard) and just leave it to do crazy stuff to the music. Only drawback is the logo does appear every now and again. And it costs $30, but you may be able to find it for free somewhere.
April 1, 2013 at 8:50 pm #1270871alright thanks i’ll check it out and tell u how it goes.
Slightly off topic but a quick one, im a new member but don’t seem to have access edit my profile?April 1, 2013 at 8:54 pm #1270864Minimum 10 posts to do things interesting like that. I think. Welcome.
Cheeseweazel is MUCH more up to date than me but I’ll still have a trawl… never know what I’ll come up with.
April 1, 2013 at 8:55 pm #1270872tar very much 🙂

Tbh it’s not really my area of expertise – and it must be about 6 years since I got G-Force, there may be better/free options around nowadays, but I do remember being impressed with it at the time. Smiley, if you look at that link there are free trial versions of all their different visualisers to try out.
April 2, 2013 at 1:23 pm #1270868I’m pretty sure the Rabid Hamster plugin for Winamp does what you require.
April 2, 2013 at 2:02 pm #1270862You need winamp, and a signal from your mixer connected to your mic/line in input on pc/laptop.
Then there’s a code you have to type in and open up on winamp but can’t remember as not done it for ages myself.
I’m sure if you looked on the net you would find instructions.
April 2, 2013 at 4:27 pm #1270865Word of advice – it’s much less hassle to use a microphone than a live input from the desk. The desk can pick up distortion from the PC and fuck up the overall sound for everybody. Not good. Only happened to me once but I’ll never forget it.Admitedly a mic doesn’t give as crisp results, but it’s a lot less cable and trip hazard too.

Rabid Hamster plugin takes care of that for you.
There is a line in function, which is just what you need. It is also fully customisable.

Cheeseweasel found a £5 transformer which prevents this (Pat may not have had this available if he was doing his gigs in the early 2000s).
Beware though that many laptops particularly lack a line in and only have a mic in so the level would be way overloaded unless you attenuate it in some way (its not difficult to make a lead up to do this but requires a slight bit of electronics knowledge).
That said I’ve decoded some weather maps from a shortwave radio by playing it next to the mic of a netbook (to avoid the same issue which is even worse when interfacing a computer with a radio as it swamps the signal you want to receive) with some success.
If you are at University I’d be tempted to pop along to the Engineering faculty and befriend some of the students there and invite them to the party (they may even be able to come up with cooler software and graphics)
April 3, 2013 at 1:12 pm #1270866Quite frankly, couldn’t find anything better for VJ software that wasn’t a pain in the arse to set up.
I mean there’s LOTS of it… good point about the mic levels being sensitive (old school way of sorting it – wrap the mic in sound damping material. Only thing it’s going to pick up then is bass).
April 3, 2013 at 1:35 pm #1270857AnonymousJust wack some hard core porn on the wall with a projector.
April 3, 2013 at 1:58 pm #1270867It’s actually quite funny watching porn animated to a beat.
Kind of dull after a while but it certainly grabs attention.
