I’m thinking of buying this sE Electronics X1 Microphone – sEX1 as an all purpose studio mic for recording some vocals, some guitar and general noises for sound effects. Does anyone have any experience with it and know if it lives up to the hype? Any one know of anything better for the price range? And does anyone know if there’s a tabletop mic holder I can buy?

March 30, 2013 at 6:32 pm #1270739Never played with one, specs look very good, especially for vocals and live drums. Noticed Sweet Water have a more features version of the same on offer right now…

Probably USA only though, and it’s the same technology with a couple extra filters.
The only thing I can think of with a comparable frequency sensitivity range would be a very old school studio paper mic. They’re very robust, but need good clean amplification to get the best out of them. And they’re heavy too. Maplin used to keep them in their range but absent from their catalogue for last couple years. 🙁
March 30, 2013 at 7:51 pm #1270734that mics a bit expensive for me, for that price i can get the stand, pop shield and back reflector. It’s a decent mic though, if only funds were unlimited, i’ve seen some nice mics that sounds so so high quality when listening to recordings, but they cost several thousand pounds lol … dream on eh.
March 30, 2013 at 8:06 pm #1270732the original one does have good specs, though at ICR-FM they use AKG and Audio Technica (although they were bought in the “good old days” of the mid 2000s when community organisations have more budget).
I would try and get a boom stand or a very solid table top stand as condenser mics are heavier than they look and with cheap stands even a dynamic mic can overbalance, or slowly keep slipping down from the weight so your mic goes off position during a performance). The full size boom stands from CPC aren’t bad though and its worth getting an anti shock mount for the mic if it doesn’t already come with one….

I’ve no space for a floor standing mount unfortunately. It’ll have to be a table top one, but I’ve not seen them sold anywhere yet. :s
but yeah an anti shock thing is essential. especially on my liability of a desk. getting a pop shield as well, to replace my homemade one; A pair of tights stretched over a bent coat hanger lol.

Slightly out of my price range for new, but might see if there’s a second hand one going if this bid falls through. I’ve upped it to £60 as i got out bid, currently winning @ £56, four days to go though so will probably get out bid.

That way no chance I can overbid, and no time for response if I manage to get the highest bid before the end of sale.
