haha thats so cool xD… Anyone seen them used? Would a normal projector be sufficient for something like this?

Yeah, near enough. Depends on the scale you want to do it on and how dark it is in the venue. Also you will need a fogger or an oil cracker.

A mediumish sized room? And oil cracker? – I’ll just invite a bunch of stoners over they’ll do the job sufficiently 😛

That should do it.
October 15, 2012 at 11:46 am #1260540I reckon A video projector is overkill. You could just use one of the old school overhead projectors and start playing with motorised optics (motorised prisms and mirrors) to get similar effects. The running costs of both are down to changing the bulb or other illumination device – can cost quite a bit of cash.
My worst ever gig – I believed a night club manager that he had a reflective screen suitable for a video projection. Actually what he had was a matt black screen suitable for soaking up LASER illumination… it didn’t reflect diddly squat from a projector, it was expecting a dirty great concentrated laser beam.
… that’s when I learned, you test EVERYTHING before you gig. Assuming other people have the right gear just makes it too easy for fuck-ups like that.

I would agree with that – also you can still pick up the colour wheel type projectors from our childhood days quite cheaply – possibly very cheaply as folk are now after fancy DMX controlled kit rather than this “old hat” stuff.
But for someone of Dubstep joe’s skills if he has access to a projector I’d consider experimenting with the trick they do where an image is projected onto a 3d object but using some clever stuff (I think it is using a layer of the physical object as a 3D-2D key overlay on the video image) it looks like bits are being added to the 3d object. its done on a large scale with buildings but I’m sure it could be done on a smaller scale. examples of this are widely circulated on the web and the software may be open source (I only know the basics of it)..
