Does anyone do a Sunday slot these days?
If not then I’d be up for bringing the show back to life but Sunday daytime. Titch, are you up for doing the same?
April 7, 2012 at 9:12 am #1252342NO WAY!!!!!
April 7, 2012 at 9:16 am #1252303Yes Way!!
April 7, 2012 at 9:18 am #1252304Need to find the mic though as it’d be nice to be able to do a tiny bit of chat.

strangely enough I was listening to you yesterday when you had to talk through them heaphones, at first I thought I’d left the radio scanner routed into the main audio (even though it was downstairs in my panniers) and thought you were the younger lad on the harbourmasters control room 😉
Depending on your budget, senheisers and AKG dynamics are a good price from CPC these days. the old style external windshield (though it might seem like a throwback from the 1970s/80s) still is effective.
Also if you have a separate production mixer its worth running your mic through the dedicated channels then you can use the better pre-amp, EQ and effects. you might need to make a switch like I did so you can monitor the program opt and the grams mixer (decks) separately, although knowing you you’ve probably got way better kit than me and can dedicate an entire matrix off your main mixer for PFL and therefore send the HP output of your mixer into there, and use another so you can drop the studio LS volume to prevent feedback…
Those PPM meters are definitely worth using especially if you have dual display. I set mine to -18dBFS for zero level (auntie standard) which seems to do the job…You can use -20dbFS if you want to be European. Raj uses something like -25dbFS – I thought they must be preparing for Scottish independence, when their broadcasters will be playing the bagpipes at full volume but apparently its a safety measure for when the DJ’s get overexcisted..
April 7, 2012 at 1:09 pm #1252298Having Titch and you back would be great! You might want to do a sound check though first. And what do you recon to streaming at 192kbs this time?

April 7, 2012 at 1:37 pm #1252300Assuming Bio’s ISP do not choke the upstream (though ISPs normally do this only for P2P transfers) 192k should be fine. not sure what router he’s got at his end (I heard the ones supplied off the shelf are locked down) but on some you can ringfence bandwidth for one of your internal IPs.
his area gets fibre in Summer (although this might also cause a risk of disruptions and it obsoletes all the old routers)..
April 7, 2012 at 2:09 pm #1252301@biotech – give me a shout if you want help setting up the kit. I would suggest if possible dedicating a entire PC to streaming (need not be a top op the range one) but with reasonable soundcard and feeding everything into this as analogue.
not sure how many you have got or if you have “his and hers” PC’s yet or one for the wife and kids – worth doing this, thus you can keep them occupied whilst you do your show (might want to slightly lock down the bandwidth on this one as mumsnet has loads of multimedia content, and your lad must now of the age where I guess he is wanting to play the flash games etc from CBBC etc. also the payback of this is when you get to your middle years and end up with a gadget you can’t understand or screen is way too small, your sons/daughters are obliged to help you use it 🙂

Wouldn’t really want to be spending too much at the moment. I have a couple of Shure SM58’s kicking about somewhere but think they might be at the lock-up. Prob not the finest radio mic but they will do the trick.
I’ve got a Soundcraft M series desk sitting next to me and that would cater for everything but until I can rearrange the studio better (I have moved in to the box room to give my lad the bigger room) there is no space to set it up!

I wouldn’t be able to commit to every week so hopefully Titch will come on board too… or I can ask a few others. That way, if we have a regular slot it should help with listener base. Rather than break it up fortnightly so people aren’t so aware of the showtimes.

Cheers dude. May ask for your help if I end up bunging some cash in to a new router because the Sagem one sky has provided is rubbish. I had to add the BThomehub on to it to provide the wireless because it dropped the connection every 5 minutes.
I have this main studio machine which will do all the work and has plenty of grunt believe me. Mummy & Lad have their own laptop yeah.
Would quite like to do a webcam stream as well as I quite like that idea. Do we have the facility to do that. I know Acidfairy does a vid stream too.
April 7, 2012 at 6:35 pm #1252348fabulous idea Bio 🙂 look forward to it
April 7, 2012 at 8:21 pm #1252324Whoop be great to have you guys back on 🙂 xxx

always thought a SM58 was wired (at least they were last time I was dealing with pro audio kit!) they should be fine for this sort of application, after all this dude (and most of his predecessors) have had to make do with the older SM57 (they have 2 in case one feed drops)

at least you managed to keep the studio space (as soon as I heard you were going to be a dad I had this concern as I know so many folk who have had to give up their studio space/workshop etc…) even living alone I find it hard to fit everything in!

:yakk: – two pieces of flaky French kit (although to be fair the old homehubs can make cheap access points). I’d get shot of both TBH and get something like a Draytek although they are unfortunately about £200 + for the latest wireless version (though that means it won’t be obsoleted when you finally get FTTC). Haven’t even got any spare kit at home or work as its either earmarked for backup kit (BT have managed to send so many reset codes down the line at least one router has blown up its PSU) or dodgy (such as the Voyager 2091 which runs hot and eventually locks up). Even the BT Business hub (managed to get one from work as a leftover) is what Singapore Telecom give away for house use!
with regard to video streams I think level 1 did have one but not sure if we ever did (or used it). AF uses livestream as well as streaming to our server (luckily she is in a area with high upstream bandwidth). I tend to watch the video on livestream but use ours or taikos stream for the audio as livestream compresses the audio quality too much for my liking!
my suggestion to use a separate encoding/streaming machine is also because unless you have everything running through the same soundcard there is a chance of timing problems/glitches (which can also be intermittent) and I had assumed you would be using a mixture of analogue and digital sources anyway (unless you have gone 100% digital). this could also handle the webcam….
April 8, 2012 at 6:04 am #1252306May well invest in that Draytek, GL. I’ve always been hesitant to buy another router because I’m unsure of how to set it up to use my sky ISP settings. I guess if I just copy it across then that will work, or I can get you to help if I cock it up!!
Yeah the Sm58 is a wired mic. Wired does me just fine.
Don’t think I’d get away with a video stream as well then, if I’m streaming at 192k I’m not sure my upstream would handle it.
Are we definitely getting fibre here then? I know they have been campaigning for it but I thought the campaign was still going on.

April 8, 2012 at 8:42 am #1252307@GL : Is this suitable?
April 10, 2012 at 5:26 pm #1252308Someone able to check a test run for me in the next few mins?
April 10, 2012 at 7:56 pm #1252309That’ll be a negatory then. 😉

April 11, 2012 at 2:12 pm #1252327Fire at will. I am locked on the live stream on the HCL tuner… and can cross check with iTunes
April 11, 2012 at 2:14 pm #1252311Cool… now about to try.
April 11, 2012 at 2:15 pm #1252312Unable to connect to socket. Just let me check a few things.
