this isn’t uncommon at all particularly on the hedonistic and permissive drug using communities – you’ve got a lot of people my age what are now parents and don’t want to be “too judgemental” so they find it impossible to set boundaries – after all you can’t exactly tell your teenage kid not to do drugs or sleep around you are doing this yourself..

it gets brought home to you when 5 years ago just one psycho manages to kill 5 prostitutes and the resulting investigation makes your town look like something out of a 1990s era ITV crime film (the ones I used to tell my mum “don’t get para watching them, that level of crime or old bill everywhere simply isn’t realistic for England”)

I will never forget those scenes, seriously it was unreal seeing that many coppers everywhere and I’ve grown up in rough bits of London where there was gangs and near enough racial wars and never seen that many old bill before…

then (because of other incidents blighting the nightlife/drugs scene) it gets linked with any night time events (as 2 of the girls were ex ravers/clubbers) and is why the cops are really harsh on drugs/partying of all kinds these days and the faith groups and all sorts of do gooders got involved – I wont criticise them though as they have done a lot of good to clean up society and have genuinely made people safer, but it was a shame that at least 7 people had lost their lives before people clued up a bit (not just prostitutes but other people killed in needless stupid behaviour like gang fights etc) and it handed over a victory on a plate to the anti-fun lobby…

This is not uncommon either and also what feds found out after the investigations 5 years ago – that it wasn’t always trafficked women or even drug addicts.

Another thing is that until comparatively recently only “sad old men” used sex workers but nowadays confident young men what could easily find girlfriends regularly were found to do so as well its another form of instant gratification like the club/drugs scene.

Incidentally the stance taken in Ipswich after the murders is viewed favourably across much of the EU, even the more “tolerant” countries especially by councils, law enforcement agencies and faith groups – to be fair it has made the streets safer for all including current sex workers and there has been a lot of good done by the drugs help charities but the collateral damage to nightlife / fun / freedom and the demonisation of older single males with younger friends and hedonistic lifestyles (including that of people like myself who have never made use of sex workers) has not been widely discussed and/or is clearly viewed as acceptable by those what have real power in society…

NL and SE(?) did this but are slowly rolling it back to varying extents as what happened is free market forces kicked in, and more expensive European women were increasingly ousted by those brought in by gangs from the former Soviet Union and these gangs increasingly managed to infiltrate the “legal/tolerated” scenes.

Swedens current laws make it illegal to buy sexual services but not to sell them which seems strange but it also a way of demand reduction as well as harm reduction to the prostitutes.

The Dutch are certainly downsizing some aspects of their red light district as well as tolerance of drugs, although in reality what they are doing is removing interpreter/translation services for foreigners so those what want to be involved in these controversial trades have to learn Dutch (en nee, dat is toch niet waarom ik probeer Nederlands te leren!)

I agree a tolerant approach can work but only when those what don’t agree with the activities are willing to pay the taxes for stuff like health checks, licensing etc – the problem here is the costs of these are easily quantifiable in countries in North Europe with open and transparent governments (and thus make easy headlines for right-wing newspapers) whereas the avoided cost of crime is not as easily quantifiable, so in harder economic times people become hard hearted… also it might seem odd but because of long standing cultural ties, the right wing of Northern European nations look admiringly at how the stubborn East Anglians did not “cave into the forces of the permissive society”…

Better a prostitute than just a slut. At least she’s getting paid…
