aren’t US cellphones in the same numbering scheme as every other phone number (unlike UK and Europe where they have unique “area codes”)?

This increases the margin for error, All it takes if for a dopey engineer to put in your cell number by mistake and this device will keep calling it until the issue is fixed… also even today faults in the central office cause phone calls to get routed to all sorts of wrong numbers.

(I’m an IT engineer who specialises in telecoms/networking :wink:) – had to reassure several friends over the years when they’ve got paranoid about telephones. In reality the feds don’t have the resources to chase down youths buying OTC pharms for personal use, recording calls creates a bunch of audio files which they have to painstakingly listen to one buy one and unless the FDA actually make folk do checks on whats being sold, I doubt the vendor would want to turn down business….

Although a tapped phone will ring like this and with no one on the end , The wire operator is testing the tap , have a look outside your window and when you go to work have a look for any vans/trucks with aerials sticking out the roof and blacked out windows . If there is you a being watched !!!! Also sometimes they might ring to see if you are in , dont answer the phone and wait by the front door with anything you can arm yourself with…..like a huge spoon and club the bastard when they enter the room . Also i’d keep your curtains shut at all times !!!!
