theres a local pirate station i can just pick up round my way, and its at the bottom at 87.5 .

its hard to get a strong signal on my way to work, but if ever im listening my radio cuts out and i hear these voices saying stuff like….

‘alright frank, you got any shovels with ya?’ and ‘cooaar you see the tits on that teacher!’

they sound like proper stereotype builders but its only in about a 3 mile radius i get it.

im geussin its just some walkie talkie type (dont know the terminology) radios crossing over?

in the UK 87.5 is currently “double allocated” and according to Ofcom can be used by other services such as builders’ hand held radios – although in line with EU rules its now also shown as part of the FM broadcast band..

Because of this anomaly and the risk of interference, the frequency isn’t popular with legal broadcasters (not even sure if Ofcom do license FM broadcast stations there) and thus tends to get snapped up by pirates, there is one in my area although the signal is not too good.

In some areas Ofcom do license 87.5 as the control channel for a trunked radio system (this is often used by bus companies, airports and rentaguards in town), and you hear a sound like a old modem if you tune your radio to this. It is not a good idea then to start up a pirate on the same frequency, as the bus company gets cross when none of their radio sets work :laugh_at:

theres a place where i sometimes stop to roll a fag on the way in, stopped there today and heard the voices again, i could sit there for ages listening in!

i now know that one is called dave, and that one of them bought a kfc for breakfast.

87.5fm is a top station the reason you dont get a good signal is because where you live and the fact that the its sittuated in a dip. I pick it up normally with no problems where i live and i;m only 13 miles away. They do reach out over a wide area though. They cover essex parts of suffolk and kent.Someone texted in from dover the other week and there’s a few that text in from margate.

yep from the terrain of the area that would make sense.. also there is loads of computer / network kit in my house and it creates interference on the FM band

Its a good station music wise and I’ve actually got a FM antenna on the roof and really ought to use that – its just that I get bogged down with sorting out loads of other tech stuff at work and by the weekend can’t be arsed to buy all the bits to get it sorted (will try and get round to it one day though)

yeah its a good station. theres something much nicer and more authentic listening to it on an fm radio. plus it means i listen to stuff i wouldnt usually download.

its nice to wake up to a bit of oldskool one morning and slamming psytrance the next on my commute in.

he lives in SE England and its the one for that area – I know exactly which station he means as I used to listen to it myself as I lived in Reading until 2006…

not giving any names as Ofcom can do their own detective work (and they have got some very flash toys to do this)

can’t pick up 87.5 at work either 😥 and its not without trying (last night tried to build a antenna with a load of spare telecoms cable) as its either Kiss or Radio 2 here otherwise :yakk:
