what power gennie would i need to run a 6k rig, decks and a few lights?
doing an event tonight and gotta go rent one, would 6k do the job???
usually someone else would sort the gennie out but im stuck doing it.

thats the technical calculation KVa= KW/ 0.85
so 6 kw becomes 7kva and that doesnt actually mean the top power consumption for the rig as it may peak well above that [to work out the peak power consumption we will need the rms power ratings of your amps – we run a system which peaks at almost twice its stated power rating when the amps are flat out.] I would estimate the power peak to be at least 2 kVa and that leaves you a KVa for your lights and decks.
Its a bit tight tbh but as long as you dont crank it up wildly you should be ok

not all the electric gets made into sound. A fair bit of it goes to heating up components instead, so you always need to put more electric power in than sound power out.
this is what catches out many of the “Norfolk” crews. Its not that some of them don’t have decent kit, but they use too small generator sets.
use decent extension leads too!
This is also why if you live in those ends the same stack sounds better at a hall party than in a field, not just that its indoors..

I got a 7KvA genny if you are struggling – but like the boys say, that is a little small.
DSeptember 3, 2008 at 6:26 pm #1178552we used an 8k generator in the end. seemed fine to me, was a hefty silienced one we got a deal on, was gonna go for a 10k but it would have twice the price.
dan, used them a few times, but tbh i bought them well before the rest of the rig came together. i had to get rid of two cos i had nowhere to put them and had my dad on my case for months to move them, so unfortunately had to sell two. as for the other two, the drivers were moved into some other bins for our first partys, as the rig was all folded horns. and theyve since been confiscated. so i hope ill see those again as they were the shit.
its a shame i had to split the four bins up, they seemed to have alot of history to them, and they were as sturdy as fuck! so where ever the other two are im sure theyre still going strong.
on a different note, got two systems now and things are in full swing. got a brand new setup for legal nights and a nice rig for our parties. our krews getting ourselves stuck in and weve had some proper good linkups and parties since late last year . raaa

we use a 4.5 kva to run a 6kw rig, decks n a couple of gobo lights n smoke :crazy_diz
to be honest we never actualy put anything like 6kw out but thats what our amps are rated at (6.3kw). had a few generator problems recently but i dont think its coz were overloading.
