March 25, 2008 at 2:30 pm #1158721that looks like an excellent party but there’s no fucking way whatsoever you’d ever be allowed to do that in Colchester today (even with a license) and it was essentially London gangsters making money out of what would today be a “free” party (like £25 to get in as opposed to a “pound for the sound”)
soon enough the cops dealt “robustly” with stuff like this even back then, I’ve seen other videos of riot squad closing down parties which people had paid a lot of money to get into, also the laws got tightened up fairly quickly
the areas what were “early adopters” of rave culture (such as Essex and Suffolk) paid a heavy price (and sadly so did many of the ravers) if it wasn’t the feds it was overdoing it and mental health issues.
the 80s/90s were an interesting time but it wasn’t all good, drugs suddenly became available and affordable to many more people but we didn’t have any of the helpful and trustworthy advice about how not to overdo things.
like many I started properly raving around 1990/91 along with a lot of my high school friends (we had mostly just all finished)
out of this lot about 70% of them had some sort of serious problems with drugs. Many of them served at least one term in HMP, not just for drugs posession or even minor dealing but crimes of violence and other criminality (i.e stuff which did hurt others such as burgling residential houses or robbing small shops) because of how the drug culture changed their attitudes towards wider society. (it wasn’t even often “gang” stuff, but formerly “normal” middle class suburban youths going a bit psychotic on comedowns during the week)
The impact of this caused a backlash which is still being felt today..
its easy when making a video to make things look a bit brighter and happier, using both technology and editing – many the “memories” being shown on these videos are people looking with rose-tinted specs..
although it might not seem like it to younger people but in many respects the party scene today is way better than the 90s….

March 25, 2008 at 2:44 pm #1158722yeah thinking more about it
- pills costing £15-20, “better” but you’d be at risk of getting ripped off
- loads of simmering racial tension between blacks and whites
- violence common and frequent in legal events (linked to the above)
- if you got caught for even 5 pills you could get a heavy fine or prison (rather than just caution today)
- comedowns were worse (maybe because of better pills)
- cops were often more hassle
- dodgy nonces at parties (like age 40+) with young teenage girls (age 12 upwards) as trophy girlfriends and getting away with it too if they were DJ’s/promoters (some are finally getting nicked today, as the girls have found the courage to talk to the feds)
- loads of people went on to crack and smack from party drugs (usually at afterparties)
THIS was the reality of the old-skool daysThe music may be pioneering and still artistically effective but we should look to the future as well as reminiscing about the past (and admit past mistakes)

There are indeed still MDMA-based pills but with less MDMA in them per pill..
That said you can get good’uns but any dealer who wants to keep their freedom is very careful who he/she sells them to. in ’06 there were pink kangaroos in East Anglia. I got myself into a rare old state double-dropping the first couple thinking they “wouldn’t be as strong”.
Another lad in the same area done 5 in one go. He wasn’t so lucky. He isn’t here today, his mates are in HMP, and this was another thing what encouraged Suffolk cops to clamp down a bit more on the party scene.
Plus the euphoria of a 90s weekend was countered by some proper dark times midweek. Some of my mates would end up in fistfights with their own parents to the point the Police were called to the family home. Although of course people stop taking so much or they get older/more mature and calm down this sort of stuff doesn’t get forgotten about – its what shapes peoples views when they go to the ballot box or make their judgements over the rave culture.
