Most countries agriculture ministries and rice producers have however agreed on roughly how many grains there are in your average 25kg sack of rice (it varies depending on the type of rice, if you google for it the figures are quoted in various places).
The way this site works is they wait until people have got enough rice for a sack, and then the advertisers on the site buy one for the UN (the way its funded is that the advertisers hope you will eventually get bored of difficult words and try to buy an ipod or whatever the ads are, which are pitched at students).
I think its a particularly good idea especially for people in places like Singapore where everyone wants to learn English but can’t often take part in other forms of activism..
