Maybe this might make me a bit of a philistine but I do appreciate some art particularly street art and the random decor things you see at raves (I think the correct word for the bigger ones might be “installations” (oh yahh.)
I don’t go to exhibitions/galleries and the whole “arts scene” really pisses me off especially when fuck loads of public money is spent on these poncey commssions and it doesn’t seem to be talent what gets people the exposure but “who they know”… or some of the absolute shite that wins prizes (although I have respect for someone who has done a big traditional painting or digital graphics that takes a lot of brains, time and effort)
There are times though when I think I want to take a fucking big hammer and angle grinder to some of this “modern art” crap and weigh in the metal and any other recyclable stuff so the Chinese can make more useful things out of this…
And then use the money for getting some of my mates who maybe don’t get the chance to study art at uni or afford big studios or to be seen on the poncey londonistan artists circuit to do some better stuff

agreed. This is the reason i hated my fine art course at uni. Seen some art my mates have done just in local small exhibitions and i prefer it much more than going to large art shows where they seem more bothered about the money.

I agree with your views re: the ‘scene’ and it does seem to very much be a ‘who do you know’ ‘who are you’ feel which I could never get on with and I think most ares of ‘art’ are similar (fashion etc)
And the money……
esp when applying for college’s – if your dad knows the dean of …. your in as I know people that have accessed particular establishments in london this way
I attend an adult ed class each week, I’m the youngest by around 20 + years (mainly retired folks) and I enjoy this time so much as they’re all great artists and quite a laugh, what I do makes them laugh as they dont really get it but its nice to have honest feedback, and mainly I do it as time for myself / relaxation space
