Just Good FriendsJune 8, 2007 at 3:05 pm #1112730All of those plus:
- morecambe and wise
- kenny everett
- benny hill
- Mind your Language (that would never get shown in Britain today, but amazingly is popular still in loads of foreign countries!)
- Two ronnies
then by the 80s
- The Young Ones
- Ben Elton (the way he fought and broke Benny Hill (finishing off his career) is an interesting episode in how ruthlessly competitive “comedy” actually is)
- Spitting Image
- Hardwicke House (pulled from TX after first few episodes)
also the “Kids TV crossovers” which were aimed at “kids” but had a lot more subversive humour then so when you were 15/16 you hadn’t grown out of them, not like the shite they make for kids these days..
- The Tomorrow People (although a sci-fi show there were pure comedy moments in it, such as 70s disco space cowboys being sprung from a Met Police station by the aliens setting bees loose to chase the cops)
- Gilbert the Alien
- Marmalade Atkins (and I thought she was quite fit too but it was OK to think this when you are 12)
- Roland Rat (ultimate London/Essex wideboy character)
- Your Mother Wouldn’t Like it
- Round the Bend
I personally think that you need to put more effort into pre-watershed comedy as you can’t get away with swearing but have to be more subtle about being subversive…
