A new mural by graffiti artist Banksy has mysteriously appeared in a bricked up window on Exmouth Market in Finsbury, north London. It shows a girl being pulled into a cash machine by a robotic arm.

Banksy, who made his name in his native Bristol, has never been afraid to make political or topical statements in his work. His latest effort could be a comment on high street banks making record profits or their apparent reluctance to repay customers unfair penalty charges.

It is a shame when you read in the news that another one of his pieces of work have been painted over, It is not the normal type of shit you find sprayed on walls…. i wouldn’t mind seeing it around where i lived 😉

true but if its “allowed” it would open the floodgates and you’d get all the shit taggers etc – and good stuff is often trashed

a mate of mine was a writer for some years and he said that there was a lot of negativity on that scene and loads of good pieces didn’t actually get destroyed by the Council (as you would have thought) but by other rival writers, either lined out or paint thrown at it..

that said when the Councils do destroy a Banksy I suspect that its authorised at high level by councillors willing to lose the value of the piece so they can say “they are not letting the graffers win”.

Ah i can see what you mean there, i think well done bit of work like a banksy or some others that you see do have a place. But then again not eveyone will have the same views.

When i have walked around i have seen a good one on a wall that dissapears soon after, but then you see things like “jenny woz ere givin daz and jay some lovin 15/05/07” or something similar that stays there for bloody donkeys. :you_crazy

to an extent I can understand when Middle England whinges but it does really piss me off when you see people take matters into their own hands and trash a piece, particularly when they are themselves “from the street” like rival crews, its not as if this country is short of walls and solid fences!

to me its no different from when DJ’s are playing and rivals “accidentally” make the needles jump by knocking into the decks

There was once a really good piece in Reading for some years but some scum wrote across it “BLOODY VANDLES(sic)”

Assuming its the councils that removed it I think its a psychological warfare thing as well, they hit the big pieces quicker and harder so people don’t get the chance to see them as much.

I like the way Banksy often incorporates part of the structure hes spraying in to the art (like the bricked up window above). This kinda gives him an edge over artists who just look for the biggest, most promanant place for their work.

it might be a subtle reason why the “normal public” (as opposed to councils etc) tolerate his work slightly more…

I have to say I’m amazed he hasn’t been either nicked or exposed, although I’ve heard that the conservative media are stalking him to try and find out who he really is…

I reckon he must have people in the “high places” of the “art/media world” sheltering him, or he would have been exposed by now, he must have to live a bit of a paranoid existence TBH..

I hope theres a subtle respect for his art in the higher places. But its probably more likely that hes a minor nuisance that isnt worth the time persuing.

Apparently “His real name is Robert Banks, a 32-year-old from Bristol”. Theres an article in “Faces of the week” on the BBC :
