something to bear in mind though: a vehicle with its engine switched off (thus ruling out faults in the carburettor or fuel system) will normally only catch on fire “by itself” due to an electrical fault – a short circuit which causes the wiring to overheat, and then cause inflammable materials close to it to take fire. The seat of the fire would therefore be found around the vehicles wiring and where the short circuit occured the wiring may even be completely melted. There is also a distinctive smell associated with overheated electrics and insulation….
OTOH a vehicle deliberately burned usually involves it being soaked with accelerant (i.e petrol) and this lit from an external source. There will be a seat of fire at this point – if there has been no external break to the vehicle check the wheel arches as often petrol is poured over a tyre and then lit.
Are the Fire Brigade looking into this? They have the kit and brains to work out this sort of thing properly… (it may be the case though they can’t because so many fires happen ๐ )
Do you think there is someone deliberately targeting “hippy” vehicles? OK if you can’t say but if you think there is any wider threat its worth warning the Tribal Living lot.
September 16, 2006 at 2:22 pm #1089927electrical fault was what I was first thinking…. I had not long taken the radio out for the new bus, But Rob that saw the fire near the start, said it seemed to think it started from around the sofa/bed area, Strange!
I get on well with John the homeless bloke and have let him stay I the van and stash is stuff in it in the day.
But there has been a new nutter in the area!
And after a friends VW needing towing I ended up the the new nutters stuff in my van, But at the time I did not know whos it was!!!
Not sure if he saw the bag inside and I and in a pissed state thought I had nicked it!?
fuck knows!!! but The day the van went up this tit was involed in a fight with a hammer!!! Prob best it was not him!!!! but all the people I have talked to in the area keep saying…. if thay had to guess… they would guess it was him!!I really do NOT know. but SOCO are loooking in to it!
