best of luck to all the people who are getting exam results around now
you do still have to work hard, it is total bollocks what the media says that they are getting easier every year..
and if you don’t get the ones you wanted it is not the end of the world and there are other opportunities in life..
August 16, 2006 at 11:09 am #1086509I’d like to second that General Lighting.
Although those damn O’levels were a pain back in my grammar school days. Morrissey’s lyrics were so apt about the Manchester Education Committee.
Bruise’s the size of dinner plates from continuous canings. Shish, corporal punishment! Now there’s an emotive subject.
Don’t think I’ve ever recovered from those daily beatings:you_crazy :you_crazy :hopeless: :hopeless:August 16, 2006 at 11:14 am #1086495General Lighting wrote:best of luck to all the people who are getting exam results around nowyou do still have to work hard, it is total bollocks what the media says that they are getting easier every year..

And the rest of you too 🙂
August 16, 2006 at 11:31 am #1086475I did well in my O’levels and GCSEs (I did the O’levels in 4th year of high school so they were the last ones in Britain) but not so well in A levels as I had started partying then.
Even then I did manage to get into higher education – but it was a fucking disaster TBH but I didn’t really want to be there (it was something you had to do rather than wanted to), and the course wasn’t what I really wanted to learn (multimedia hadn’t been invented then)
the final straw was that the authorities there did not like me discovering the Internet and WWW in 1992 and using their network to spread info about drug use!
I still have nightmares about the stress of school and exams even now though..
I think age 16-18 is too young to be made to decide your entire future and until society realises this too many people are put through stressful and traumatic experiences.
That said I have managed to stay in full time employment from 1992 until now with only a years career break and have a decent job nowadays and can afford to share costs of a mortgage with my sister (although we live in different parts of the country!) so I don’t think I’ve done too badly out of life…
August 16, 2006 at 11:56 am #1086481Good luck K_trina and everyone else!

I think you’ve done very nicely. I hope you enjoy the financial benefits later on in life. IMHO 16-18 is much too young to have to endure the stress caused by life changing exams.

Business Studies = A
Eng Lit= B
French = C (2 marks off b!<<<pissed off)A bit gutted as last year I got ABB so Ive dropped,, but chuffed as I literally didnt do fuck all and I got in to uni to s’all good!
August 17, 2006 at 12:18 pm #1086482Congrats K-Trina. Good results mate!!
I did almost nothing for my A-Levels and paid the price for it. (Two E’s)
That was 10 years ago though and I don’t think it really effected me much as I never had any intention of going to uni anyway.
August 17, 2006 at 2:47 pm #1086493Well done K trina!…. TOP BANANA!!!!!!

congratulations – the foreign languages are always useful…
what are you studying at uni?
August 17, 2006 at 3:02 pm #1086477incidentally it says on the news that too few students in Scotland took A-levels to be counted seperately. Presumably a similar number of people stay on at high school until age 18, so do people have different kinds of exams in Scotland then?
August 17, 2006 at 3:07 pm #1086491Yup we have standard grades instead of GCSE’s and highers instead of A levels
In our 5th year we can sit highers which are the equivelent of A levels but done in a year instead of 2 then in 6th year we can do highers again in different subjects and SYS’s (sixth year studies) which are harder again over a year.
Some private schools in Scotland pupils can sit A levels and GCSE’s instead of standard grades and Highers so obviously this year not many did for them to be counted
I left school after 5th year because i got the results i needed to go to Uni and as i was one of the oldest in my year coz our cut off date is different to yours again ours is the end of Feb i was able to go to uni at 17…

hmm – that seems like double the amount of competitive public exams that we have to endure in England and Wales :yakk: – I’m glad I didn’t spend my schooldays in Scotland; I would have gone mad with that many exams to study for…
August 17, 2006 at 3:18 pm #1086492Yup total pain in the ass hence the reason i legged it after 5th year lol
August 17, 2006 at 4:28 pm #1086505well done K-trina
