August 11, 2006 at 12:59 pm #1085836puritans can often be backed by the power of the market… those who can afford to turn down business (and many bigger companies can…) often do terminate contracts because of stuff like this
if you read the title deeds of land and buildings its extremely common to see “restrictive covenants” where a the original landowner forbids the property being used for certain purposes.
Some are understandable for environmental protection and safety purposes but its very common to see restrictions against buildings being used for certain forms of entertainment due to the moral values of the original owners.
One pub my friends squatted had a covenant saying it was not to be used as a “fun palace”. I am not sure what a fun palace is or was, but we made a big sign saying “welcome to the East Readingstoke Fun Palace” and put it up in the hallway.

August 11, 2006 at 3:39 pm #1085842Covenants are fairly common, often to do with things like access rights with shared drives etc.. Even if the covenant was between Lord X and Mr Y in 1900 it still exists today as the new tentants who take on the property do so on the premice that they will keep to the exisiting covenants.. There are a fair amount of court cases regarding them.. Often stuff to do with not splitting the land up for redevelopment, or use of farm land for things like banger racing etc which would effect their neighbours, esp when people sell land adjacent to their property, they don’t want to sell it to someone who is going to make their lifes hell, or effect the value of their house..
August 11, 2006 at 5:33 pm #1085837the whole of hamstead ‘garden suburb’ in north london is pub free… the houses were originally built by a puritan employer who didn’t want the workers getting high on ale and nicotine
