July 18, 2006 at 1:19 pm #1083204I’ve worked for the last ~10 years with a 2 1/2 year gap in there somewhere when I did some travelling in NZ and Australia, and some other things…
July 18, 2006 at 1:26 pm #1083223i work around PV time – its what i do to relax:groucho:
i am selfemployed which makes it easier:wink:
July 18, 2006 at 1:29 pm #1083210I worked up until a month ago. Whilst I was working I probably spent about 2hrs of the day bumming about on the internet though. (the time spent on the internet has no relation to the reason why I’m not working at the moment 😉 )
July 18, 2006 at 1:36 pm #1083205I’ve worked in IT for the financial services industry since about 1992 or so.
I make computers communicate with each other, and specify and order a lot of equipment so need access to the Internet.
there is also more than one PC on my desk so I use one to produce batch reports from a database (which can take some time) whilst using the other for the net.
Also my laptop and that of my office assistant aren’t on the filters (anyone here read BOFH on El Reg?) :devilish:

It’s fookin great especially in this weatherdont u feel ashamed that u dont contribute to the state and only spunge off it??? If every 1 worked and contributed to it then we prob wouldnt hav as many probs as we hav now.
Does my head in when i think about all the hours i work and hav stoppages which goes to people who are complete Bums and hav no drive in life. Y should i work to put money in the pockets of people who dont want to help themselves.
July 18, 2006 at 2:30 pm #1083235A mate of mine used to say the unemployed play a valuable role in the work ethic,ie when normal decent people see strays and wastrels struggling to survive on fuck all ,they think ,fuck me i dont want to end up like that and keep thier noses to the grindstone a bit more.
July 18, 2006 at 2:31 pm #1083226Started working again last week,after being sick for 7 month…
Love to be back:love:

But doesnt it piss u off that u work yr balls off and in the long run the people who do fuck all most of their life come out on top?? Some dude who has no job or ne drive in them gets given a flat / home and shit loads of hand outs all the way through there life. The person who works their nutts off end up havin to pay for ne thing, dont get ne help from the state just more money taken off them. Then when they retire they get a shit pension which they hav worked there balls off to get and end up havin to sell there home if they need care in elderly life. i think its totally backwards myself, people who work all their lives get penalised for it where the people who do fuck all get it easy!! The government should really b helpin out the people who make an effort, not give the people who do fuck all verything. give them an incentive to get off their lazy arses and contribute.
July 18, 2006 at 2:44 pm #1083206not everyone who does not work is on giro….
and even those on giro still end up contributing to some extent to the state; other than on food items all goods are subject to taxation.
that said to get the dole involves a massive sacrifice of your personal freedom and self-worth though anyway.
With the amount of form filling and interviews/meetings involved with overworked civil servants who secretly (or not so secretly) despise you, unless you are genuinely physically or mentally incapable of working you might as well have got a job anyway….
I have been without work during a time from 2001 until 2002 (after the dot come crash) and never want to go through it again – it gets very stressful after the first few months when you find it hard to get a job again and you end up (perhaps without realising it) becoming dependent on other people such as your family or the state.
it can be hard to get away from this, even turning to crime or dealing is not an option as this scene is just as competitive as the normal legitimate economy.
July 18, 2006 at 2:44 pm #1083236Dont think I know anyone thats NEVER worked, speaking from experience it sucks too much and though Im unemployed at the minnit and enjoying it,I know the novelty will wear off pretty quick and Ill be back to the old 8.30-6 before too long 🙂
July 18, 2006 at 2:51 pm #1083244i think the same as fattman, lazy bums get everything, i know loadsa people who do fuck all and get shit loads for it. does my head in. i wouldnt wana be on the dole anyway tho i wouldnt feel self worth, i dont like to sponge cos there is no reason why i cant work so i do. Plus i would get bored and depressed with no direction in life…need something to keep me busy…all the time……:lol_crash
July 18, 2006 at 3:11 pm #1083216Quit my job of five years about 9 months ago, was just gonna have a short break but ive been a tad lazy really due moving in with family again and not many bills to pay for a change…. Should be going back to my old job soon, well the doors open if I want it, but not doing any work till this lush weather has ended… Yes ive become a bum :groucho:
July 18, 2006 at 3:36 pm #1083207TBH although I’ve done it once I couldn’t deal with temporary seasonal or casual work … the lack of stability is worrying, and there is a lot of competition from people originally from other regions and countries who want the jobs more and are prepared to work longer hours, weekend shifts etc….
once you stay out of work for a while you really need to explain the “career break” well in interviews as a lot of employers (for permanent positions) just won’t employ someone who doesn’t “need” a constant job..
BTW anyone else who works in IT/professional office work noticed that weekend and evening working is becoming a lot more common?
July 18, 2006 at 3:43 pm #1083231yeah were alway open at the weekends i really should get sum sunday double time (if only i didnt go ravin)
July 18, 2006 at 8:31 pm #1083217Answer to the thread, I have pointless access to a PC at work which has 99% of internet sites Blocked, NHS Feckas!
July 18, 2006 at 8:45 pm #1083214i’ve been working since i was 14… full-time since i was 15.. with some major travel breaks, although i’ve ended up having to work very hard in someof the countries i’ve visited due to going with no savings, but i guess that was part of the plan
what’s the point of travelling aorund a country like some rich bum if you never understand what that country is liek from a local’s perspective?? working for a local wage is a good way to begin to understand life from a local perspective
saying that, i never want to work on any more middle eastern building sites
those guys seem to make hard work into a competition!
i recently quit (in disgust) the job that i was building a career on
getting lots of offers… all temporary, short term, a bit unstable, but that’s the nature of the voluntary sector
in the meantime i’m grabbing any hours of any casual work i can… my own rule of thumb is a bit higher than being a bum on the street, don’t mean that in a judgemental way… i’ve been homeless and drug-addicted…
as long as i can pay the rent, bills and feed my family i’m not proud about what work i do… will never work for an agency though… that’s like paying satan to make you work :you_crazy
July 18, 2006 at 9:03 pm #1083219Been in and out of work for years, go between enjoying routine to it completely pissing me off 🙂 I love working when there’s an end result, money don’t figure really, had 3 periods of homelessness and grafting for a soggy cheese sarnie and half a bifter’s been some of the best of times 🙂 Love doing my graphics, actually got it translated into cash on occasions too, pharmacy got too much but tending to a sea of green resulting in a sea of smiling faces ain’t a bad way to go in life :weee:
Love and peace folks 🙂 <
