I read it in the FT today 🙂
btw, can we stop talking about SJ, like it was the only thing in the world please:)
so anyway BBC over spent by 20 million, How can this happen, don’t they know how to budget ?
April 19, 2006 at 8:40 am #1070755AnonymousProducing Little Britain beyond series 1 was a horrific waste of money.
April 19, 2006 at 8:42 am #1070775nah. LB2 was ok, LB3 wants BURNING
(I reckon snarf blew the money on the horses…. Something like that anyway)

April 19, 2006 at 9:27 am #1070746hardly fucking surprising TBH
They pay a few “star talent” (both creatives/managers) stupid amounts of money – then exploit others for fuck all (like most media organisations they use a significant amount of unpaid work experience people)
also a lot of stuff is outsourced/semi-privatised
so there is an atmosphere of internal politics, lying, mistrust and hate in there. It makes the worst elements of the free party scene look like paradise. because its a job people like doing everyone competes with each other to keep their work.
People even sabotage each others projects (although TBH that happens across the entire media industry) – with a company as dysfunctional as that its hardly surprising people cannot keep an eye on the budgets – TBH the same thing was happening to ITV a few years back but because the market “sorted it out” it ended up with the big companies and money men taking total control.
imagine if crews were funded by tax to do a free party but one group of people decided “right we wil run tings” so they trashed a few others rigs – OK maybe not as blatant as using petrol bombs them but cutting through signal cables, re-routed stuff or removing equipment so speakers were blown on peaks… that sort of thing often happens (on a more subtle scale) within the mainstream media
I once worked as a broadcast engineer and had some very strange support calls, including a very sheepish engineering manager admitting to me that a rival region had been deliberately tampering with equipment)
Auntie does try to be a bit more creatives takes more risks which is why they end up spending more – but they do fucking stupid things like commission a programme and pay for it, and then let it sit in archives without being TX’d because of some pointless disagreement.
Although I think a lot of their stuff is OK its not worth the license fee
it does need to be sorted out and maybe even to abandon the false pretence of being independent (perhaps make the BBC a non-departmental public body funded by Ofcom)
but you could still keep Auntie as an outlet for news, information and a training ground for new talent… thats what every other nation does with their public broadcasters and it hasn’t affected them that badly TBH
April 19, 2006 at 9:31 am #1070759shock horror
bbc lay off half the accounts dept and suddenly the press is full of moles giving away confidential information.
I think the bbc are doing a cracking job btw.

you mean the shock news that Terry Wogan earns £800,000?
the BBC makes good programmes and wasting the money on celebrity pisses me off but if it’s what the public want I have to accept that I’m in the minority

but most other nations’ public broadcasters are rubbish!

The BBC its doing a good job but maybe it could do a better one for less money out of our pockets.
Quote:the BBC makes good programmes and wasting the money on celebrity pisses me off but if it’s what the public want I have to accept that I’m in the minoritybut do they have a choice? everyone has to pay the licence fee or they get nicked. Thats what I object to TBH
it may seem harsh but if it means there is less decent stuff on telly I’m perfectly happy to accept that for not having to pay for it. I know people say you don’t have a choice with ITV but not every product is advertised on there and the conventional broadcast ad market is declining as the internet takes over… yes, I know ITV is pants now but thats “market forces in action”.
there are also various “old guard cliques” keeping a tight hold on who gets anywhere in the media and whose projects get commissioned (as Ricky Gervais was pointing out a few days ago…)
we can (and do) make our own media and entertainment. I’m not totally anti public broadcasting by any means but not the stealth tax of the licence fee…
April 19, 2006 at 10:43 am #1070750budget btw
just to be a gramma queen

The license fee is the best of a load of bad ways of financing PST.

ITV is fucking terrible.

Exactly. Radio 4 is worth the money alone.

Well, I did have a flutter on the Grand National sweepstake that did the rounds here the other day. A whole quid…
Last of the big spenders, hey. =o)

dump a few of the tired celebs and the middle management cliques and let some new talent in – what appears to be happening is that these cliques are keeping their power and the new entrants to the BBC are being dumped on..
April 19, 2006 at 11:00 am #1070793i’d say that bbc3 has done more for innovative british comedy in the last couple of years than anyone else has, ever.

I know Canada produces decent films and comedy. In Germany though the public broadcasters are not up to much (I used to live there). Some of the locally produced stuff is excellent but it’s very rare. Unfortunately the schedules are full of dubbed American trash.
I’d much prefer to see a minimal licence fee being spent on programming that wouldn’t otherwise get made. That side of things has little to do with the commercial mass-market bollocks that ITV does so well.
andy – radio 4 has done the most over time – the list of successes that started there is unending

the bbc sound be renamed the ministry of propeganda considering how impartial the news is.
April 19, 2006 at 11:16 am #1070809They have probably spent it on property development in Manchester. =o|

Sure, there are celebs who don’t deserve their pay but you’re forgetting all the other things that the BBC offers; the wicked web services, the kids channels free from consumerism, BBC3, BBC4 (which I find myself watching more and more), even the Essential Mix is good at least twice a year.
£150 is nothing at all when compared to the dross you pay for on Sky.

thats exactly the sort of thing I would like to see the BBC doing
as for infrastructure they already spent a load of cash for that 8 years ago, but they could well have gutted out half their studios, sold the stuff off cheap and then paid over the odds yet again for new kit; they have a habit of doing stuff like this and thats where the money goes…
Quote:andy – radio 4 has done the most over time – the list of successes that started there is unendinglocal radio could improve big time though – a few hours every weekend for local urban music instead of pandering to middle englands tastes all the time… I’d like to be able to hear D&B and techno on radio Suffolk at the weekends, not country and western – FFS Needham Market is not nashville even if you do have a cow or two…
