April 13, 2006 at 10:05 am #1069854down here in England we’d call most of that stuff commercial club music (or cheese). It is tends to end up only being played at events where you get the sort of people who drink to get drunk and fight rather than party – the sort of club or where you have to pay loads of money to get in, drinks are overpriced and there are often fights/gangsters letting off CS canisters (mace) on the dancefloor etc.
no real venue would play this sort of music; “rave music” here is actually made up of a number of distinct types of music which are very diverse in their sounds like breaks, drum and bass, hard techno/hardstyle, breakcore etc. If you attend a real underground rave in the UK you may find 3 or more sound systems playing all of these styles…
April 13, 2006 at 11:54 am #1069858Anonymousanything can be remixed, so its quite possible to use elements of these tunes to make some decent rave music. however, i may be a pacifist, but if someone stuck on barbie girl at a rave, i would bury them alive. in their own shit.

and yes i also agree that it dose now fit into the catagory of club music rather than rave…..but what is rave music exactly-? theres yst so many different types its hard to say really. a few raves ive been 2 have hard techno playing all night long kinna gives ya aheadache when your dancing right next 2 the dj let alone the amp. :horay:

haha what-? barbie girls not popular anymore-? lol. wow….:bounce_m:rave is a difficult definition to define, my favorite is “to wander deleriously”.it mean different things in different cultures, and while it can be applied to licensed indoor clubs, my idea of a rave is an outdoor party or one in a squatted building, run by and attended by people disilluisioned by the corporate club system and licensinglaws. the were originally called raves in england, now more commonly known as freeparties, and they are free of charge to attend and generally outside the law and accepted society. the “rave” parties in licensed venues that originally sprung up in the uk(but are now worldwide), claiming to replecate the original raves but in a more reglated environment are an insult to the idea of raving and ravers, if you ask me, and im sure there are many “rave” parties that would play aqua. but to me this just shows what a travesty they have made of “raves”. i blame paul oakenfold and danny rampling and all those scummers who have shat on the idea of raves. but at the same time they are liberal events in essence, so that is why their USP was so open to exploitation, and why it is essentially wrong to exclude any type of music.
but generally, i dont think any of the above comments were made by anyone who originally enjoyed aqua, its genrally accepted by everyone i have ever met and had respect for that aqua are enemies of music and should be punished for crimes against humanity. i know id punch any one of them in the face if i ever saw them in the street.
April 14, 2006 at 9:25 pm #1069855well lots of countries produce electronic dance music of various kinds which are played at a rave…
but my definition of a rave is the original British one that USE mentions and has more even to do with the actual nature of the event than the music played.
in the late 1980s American house music and hip hop was becoming popular in the UK.
here in England we made our own variants of this – balearic beats, street soul and “acid house/bleeps”. we played it on our pirate radio stations and wanted to dance to it, but it was not legal to have a nightclub opening later than 2am in most parts of England (3am in London) and those who owned clubs were paranoid about a new street culture where taking drugs was less taboo than previously.
many people, particularly those who took drugs which gave them more energy, wanted to go on partying longer than that and of course they did not want cops nicking them for drugs or bouncers throwing them out of the club,
an economic recession of the time meant there were lots of empty industrial buildings (warehouses) about, so people broke into these and held unlicensed all night parties in there.
That is what we originally callled a rave, and original rave music had loads of influences – house and hip hop, 1980s synthpop, even european pop music. during the 1990s it split into the various genres mentioned you see in the other posts..
in the 1990s some areas (rather grudgingly) changed their licensing laws to permit “rave-type” events, but because of the amount of drugs being sold attracting gangsters many of these events closed down either because cops raided them or the people who organised them were intimidated and sometimes even attacked or killed by gangsters – these sorts of raves had high entry prices and organised drug dealing networks so there was cash to be fought over..
so the scene split up.
some people carried on doing commercial events and fighting it out with cops and gangsters (for instance there is a scene called UK garage/grime which about fighting and proving yourself like in US gangsta rap – people even carry guns in a country where you are not supposed to have them!)
and others do commercial events which are bigger nightclub events but because they are held in normal nightclub venues it often costs loads to get in, people are searched, there are undercover cops around etc. (narcs)
but the real underground raves in warehouses and other buildings still happen, as well as outdoor festivals. Because some are not licensed and cops are increasingly trying to stop them you may not hear as much about them in public places any more – but this sort of event is a real rave, and at one of these you can hear just about any sort of music that was mentioned in the previous posts, often live stuff and tunes people have made themselves with their computers… (apart from AQUA of course..)
