ive wanted to make my own tunes for a while now, anyone got any pointers on what programs are best for making NRG and dnb type tunes??
downloaded reason and fruityloops demos, find reason a bit tricky and fruityloops well tacky, but havent had time to really get to grips with either.
also is it best to use a midi keyboard/midi controller/other interface or stick with using the mouse?
is there any other equipment i would need too? obviously a pc and decent pair of studio monitors (im buyin a pair of alesis active monitors of a m8) .
April 4, 2006 at 2:19 pm #1069330Anonymousjust to start the ball rolling, my mates swear by reason and cubase. they both have their uses, but i beleive reason is preffered as you can get loads of synths to plug into it. also i gather that a midi keyboard is a must. but im no producer, so this is all second hand info. i’ll try and get my mate to post up some more info…he made these beasts: http://psycho-acoustics.co.uk/shivermusic.html
April 4, 2006 at 5:49 pm #1069336what you use depends on how seriously you are taking it, how complex a program you are prepared to learn to use and what you can buy/beg/borrow/steal
Cubase and reason are the serious end of the market; the manual for reason is a doorstop in paper format ( and i have used it as such)
at the simpler end of the market but lacking all the features in the two above you will find ableton live, cakewalk, magics music maker, ejay, fruity loops
I have a fondness for ejay cos its simple and cheap; others will swear by their favourites.
if you want to get your toes wet and not drown in unfamiliar technical info try ejay or maybe ableton.
when the limitations of the program start to annoy you it is time to move on to something more complex. what i say is push the program you do choose to its limit and then upgradehope this helps:bigsmile:
April 4, 2006 at 6:19 pm #1069331Anonymousi dont know how good an idea putting this up is, but if you get thetrial version of a program, then search for “name of program here- keygen”, you will get a serial number generator for the progam. voila! program for free. just be carefull. some sites that deal in keygens may give you viruses. if you get a virus being gay, disconnect your internet at the cable, then run a full scan on ur compurter. dont blame me if you deck ur pc.
gl….good idea or delete?
April 4, 2006 at 8:27 pm #1069328i have used cubase SX, which are massive, but just to arrange sounds / beats it’s quite user friendly and has scope for you to develop with (into multi-media production)
reason does my head in… it’s really for people studying music technology / sound engineering or those who are adept and committed already… too complex for me
jsut got a copy of ableton live and it seems quite fun to use and irons out some of those ‘match up’ niggles I had with cubase / nuendo
i like Absynth for making your own crazy sounds and melodies
i’d recommend making friends with some people who are already using some of the above and seeing which ones you like
April 4, 2006 at 10:52 pm #1069334k cheers ill give some more demos a go,
i tried a keygen but couldnt get it to work. do you need to go to ‘register’ or somethin? and will it unlock the full program?
April 5, 2006 at 1:53 am #1069332Reason and Cubase are both great programs that I use. Didn t take me long to understand the basics of Reason, so you should have no problems. Google Reason Tutorials if you do have any probs, theres lots of info and help avalible online.
I always thought Fruity Loops was a little tacky too, but alot of good Drum And Bass producers use it and make some great tunes.
April 7, 2006 at 6:18 pm #1069337I use FL Studio 5 and don’t think it’s tacky at all. I use it with Z3ta+, Kontakt 2, V-Station and a few others.
Reason is alright but I think it sounds a little thin and metallic.
drumnbass.be, there are quite a few fellas there that us Fruity and most have tight productions as well.
April 8, 2006 at 12:04 am #1069327I’d agree with Asdf. Although I tend to use Reason, fruity is no longer tacky. Maybe FL 1 – 3 were. But since 4 it’s quite a professional program which is user friendly.
I hear what you are saying about Reason mate. It just has that ‘sound’. It’s a great program but it does have that certain quality to it that lets it down. I’ve noticed it more after borrowing my mates Virus C. Making phat sounding samples on that then whacking them in to reason seems to take away from the quality and warmth despite no after effects being applied at all.

ill have a loook , as for FL-5 its probably me thats a bit tacky. i also find that thje first beat on every bar, no matter what sound effect or plugin im using, is loudeer than the rest. any way i can stop this or is it just me beiong a noob? went to some massiv musik store and got some guy to give me a quick demo of the most popular programs, managed to confuse me in the process tho! he showed me cubase, reason, ableton and fruity loops. as price is my limiting factor im gonna try and get cracked versions of them to see what suits me. if that fails, ill buy one thats reasonably cheap and force myself to get to grips with it till i have a better understanding of this production malarky.
April 16, 2006 at 3:54 pm #1069326There is another extremely underrated option too just to let you know. It’s my preffered choice of music production software but each person has their own methods of working.

I’m sick of ppl tellin me oh such an such software is crap u wanna use this.. coz i’m happy using what i do and it works, it does what i need it to do.. and i’ve had great responses from my tunes…
So at the end of the day there isn’t really a best production software its just what u are happiest working with an if ur just starting out i wouldn’t recommend trying cubase or reason unless u have an entire year to read the manuals….lol
June 27, 2012 at 4:27 pm #1069342Mac or Windows? A lot of people like Logic Pro on the mac because of it’s ease of use. On Windows, Cubase takes the cake. There are heaps of tutorials online if you get stuck 🙂
June 27, 2012 at 4:56 pm #1069333Been using FL 10 for a short while but am shortly gonna make the transition to cubase. FL is a good program though

There are worse ways to learn. It’s not great but it’s a starting point, in different incarnations.
Damn sight easier than trying to do EVERYTHING in a sound wave editor like Audacity.

I have a convert 😀
June 28, 2012 at 12:35 pm #1069340i use ableton live. i used to use reason, nuendo and digital performer at uni. for me, live is just so much better than the others. im sure logic and cubase can do pretty much everything live can and im not experienced with these although nuendo is similar to cubase (steinberg). and either way, pro’s use all sequencers… i was reading a little while back how the prodigy guy loves using reason, although i doubt he uses any presets as they seem quite lame… but live just looks the business and everything is really smooth. to me, reason seems quite clunky in comparison. im working with the sampler atm and its incredible the level of manipulation… check these:
