often party people find abandoned equipment in the buildings which would otherwise be disposed of – often seem a shame not to make better use of it.
in my case (being a techie with a lot of networks/telecoms experience) its usually IT/office equipment – suffice to say I’ve had kilometres of structured cabling, hubs etc (I could let my pet cat have a net connection if I wanted to!) and even an entire telephone system (mine is one of the few residential homes in Reading where you now have to dial 9 for an outside line 😀
I even got a 1972 red dial phone to go with it which I restored (as its made in my year of birth)
and of course there’s the myriad of safety signs usually left behind, and sometimes nice bits of furniture
NB: I am only talking about obviously decomissioned and abandoned stuff, not rinsing “between lets” buildings which is theft rather than recycling!
whats everyone else had?
September 10, 2005 at 2:14 pm #1066993Anonymousthe best thing i can remember was from scumtek- i got a load of weird see-thruogh tubes that i think are involved in irrigation. im gonna fill em full of weird shit and hang em as decor at parties. unfortunately i left them in mat the cats van, so he’s had to put up with them being a blight on his sitting room ever since. if you’re reading this, sorry mate!

you don’t need to irrigate that part of the world – its more a case of keeping old Father Thames from pissing into your garden/house!
the environment agency and RWE Thames Water use that site – I would suspect one use for these these pipes is to monitor what is euphemistically called “grey water” whilst keeping storm drains and the like from backing up into the streets.
With the current state of the drains in London, Its a big tradeoff between keeping the streets from flooding and not discharging untreated sewage into the Thames (and plenty of this happens down-river of Teddington (i.e towards Essex as thats officially classed as the sea!)
I would expect they are for contraptions which shine a light through the clear pipe (whilst the water flows through) – check the light which comes through the other side and it gives an indication of how clear (or otherwise) the water is (this light level can also be transmitted as an electric signal via telecom circuits to remote monitoring stations)
they’re a nice find, but I’d rinse ’em out first 😀
September 10, 2005 at 4:13 pm #1066995Picked up some bags of orange UV plastic tags at an old paint pigment factory.
Made some nice glowing decorations by stringing them all together.
Also the variety of safety signs.

September 11, 2005 at 3:28 pm #1066989Not a lot as it happens.
Just a 20 odd meter length of mains cable with ceeform plugs.
Off topic but Carfull (who I didn’t previously know) posted on our forum that he had lost his keys at a party (not ours) and wondered if anyone had picked them up.
2/3 weeks later we partied a location and at the end somebody handed in some keys.
As it happens it was the same location (disused building in the middle of nowhere) and they were Carfull’s keys!
Magic!

September 15, 2005 at 11:38 am #1066991Not at a party but once we were checking out an abandoned building and I found a pile of old N64 games in a drawer of half a desk. The other side had been set on fire an it was just the drawers that were left.
