Friday 5th March 1999 - 9pm-4amTrippy, hoppy, dubby nightThe Students Union has such a good reputation (and deservedly so) that it regularly pulls in non-student crowds from the town. This months biggest session, entitled Lost The Plot, was such a banging party that anyone who missed it should hang their heads in shame. I never believed there could be 'varying styles of techno' - i thought it was all the same humping thumping hard and fast beats, but I was wrong. Cafe mondial tempted clubbers with organ shaking vibrations and breath stopping techno. Anyone with a pacemaker was doomed. The impressive visuals and blinding strobe were hard to take in large doses but added to the ambience. The main arena played host to a solidly thumping, but more tinny, mash up of hard beats. Market stalls sold lumo body-paint and other decorations. Psychedelic aztec-style drapes clung to all the walls and the stary ceiling, giving the room much more texture. Mojo's cafeteria-cum-bar served food to keep energy levels up, while the DJ spun some darker electro vibes - a Daft Punk meets Depeche Mode scenario. Upstairs was a deliciously decorated chill-out room. A dark smoky hole scattered with bean bags and bodies embraced mushy sleepyheads and smoochies alike. Brightly lit suspensions dangled from above. It was a kind of boogie-woogie scout camp, minus the camp-fires and marshmallows. Music ranged from reggae to dreamy trippy eclectic tunes, deep house to trippy hoppy dubby twiglet. It was £4/5 in advance and certainly worth it. Keep your eyes peeled for the next big one. Jamie Cox Reading Evening Post.
