How did you start out?
I just got pissed off listening to the same DJs ripping people off week in,
week out and basically not giving people value for money as far as I was
concerned, being a raver. I decided after watching that for years on end
that I could do a good enough job personally to make people come away
feeling as if they's enjoyed themselves and that's what it's about.
What is your involvement with Congo Natty?
I Don't have any direct involvement in Congo Natty apart from that I run the
distribution label that sells all the tunes for Congo Natty and Knowledge
and Wisdom. I DJ on tour with them, they're my friends who live next to me,
but that's it really.
What is Souljah records?
Well, this is the producer of Souljah records and Knowledge and Wisdom,
(points to friend) Terry T. He produced most of the tunes I played tonight.
We've got a few double-packs coming out in the next few months. We got some
upfront 2001 jungle stuff, not just old stuff being rehashed, proper upfront
new stuff. Terry T runs both those labels, Souljah and Knowledge and Wisdom.
What role does your rastafari religion play in your music?
It's not really so much a religion, it's just an actual vibe. We do things
at our own speed, not at other people's pace. Others people think that
people will jump through hoops or this that or the other. We do things in a
more... Carribean style, more relaxed, just our thing on a vibe, it's never
a rushed thing. We have got some religious beliefs but that doesn't come
into it really, it's our own personal stuff.
What kind of venues do you feel are best for jungle, clubs, festivals or
squats?
Anything. Music is for everybody. Music relieves you from your everyday
stresses, you go out raving at the weekend to get away from the everyday
shit you go through. Doesn't matter where you start playing it as long as
you play it.
What is your opinion of the UK jungle scene at present?
It's sporadic. There's not enough raves on and the scene is suffering.
What would you like to see?
More raves, definitely more raves. More weekly events instead of them being
spread out like once every 3 months. More venues to create more of a scene.
Uk 2-step is running it at the moment, but it's all good.
How does the UK scene compare to those of abroad?
Abroad is massive mate. Abroad is mega. Thousands of people come out raving
every week without fail.
What advice would you give to Dissident?
Keep doing what you're doing. If you give up now someone else will come and
take your spot, simple. Someone will come and do exactly what you're doing.
If you give up someone will take off and it will be bigger than you. Just
keep doing what you are doing and hopefully it will get through.
