Dissident DJ/Producer/Diplomat

FixIn his Dj sets he fuses ragga jungle with tech-step, with half-speed dub and hip-hop and ragga over the top with a pinch of hardcore and jungletek.

Influences outside of jungle include intelligent hip-hop (eg. Taskforce, Roots Manuva), turntablists, original hip-hop, punk and current squat D.I.Y mentality, Sisters of Mercy, goth, dub, ragga, P.R.A.N.K parties.

Inspiring jungle includes Congo Natty, Jonny L (before he started producing garage bullshit with Posh Spice), Technical Itch, Hardcore jungle, anything stomping that's intelligently produced eg. HEADFUK music, Deathchant, Dead Silence.

SciteksSciteks along with Fix is one of the founding members of Dissident. They met in Gloucester 4 years ago, hated each other on site, but then became friends through a common appreciation of the good music.

I produce drum n bass, breaks and anything else I feel like at the time. Its useful to have a few tunes on the go at a time to stop yourself getting sick of them. I used to use a hardware sampler and synth, but the power and flexibility of software has got me now: a shameless convert. I'm from the DIY skool of production : no sample CDs or nicked breakz on me. Designing drums and programming beats is the bit I enjoy the most. I like something about very nearly all music, but I like the most things about D'n'B! All the way from Bukem : >) to Technical itch : >( .

Some of the best stuff around at the moment is coming out of Europe: Chris SU, SKC, Future Prophesies, Black Sun empire, Pieter K, Klute and of course Teebee; the music has never been so good. Metalheadz is my favourite label though: so many good releases over the years: Platinum Breakz 1 and 2 are just fantastic, 3 is not too shabby either mind, as well as loads of dope singles. Ultimate ambition is to get a release on Headz, although that kind of quality is a long way off in the distance for now. Any feedback on my tunes from similar minded fans would be greatly appreciated techydrum@yahoo.co.uk if you've got the time. I'm always up for swapping Nuendo arrangements, audio files and Kontakt instruments too if there are any producers reading. Laterz.

Incite The past year i've collaborated exclusively with Kurtis concentrating on the development of our own sound.  Quite rough with some smoother bits!.  We got a way of jamming it that made it pretty live.. we weren't able to just press play and sit back.  Thanks to anyone who gave us positive feedback on the sets, my own opinion was that we had a long way to go but if it went down well then we suceeded. If you saw a live show then you are amongst the only people to ever hear it...

As much as I enjoyed playing the live sets with Kurtis, it confirmed what I was suspecting: THE HARDWARE JUST HAS TO GO.

The sale of my samplers marks the death of the old method, along with the death of the old live sets.  We will return, I give you my word but it may be some time.

I'm making my setup mobile with a centrino based laptop, Hercules DJ interface (wicked bit of kit that doubles as a soundcard and midi controller: check www.hercules.com), ekeys mini keyboard and some creative labs travel speakers.  Why? So I can go around the world and take the whole lot with me.

Throughout my trip I want to develop as a DJ an idea that I only ever toyed with until recently, the production will always be there or thereabouts. I hope to maintain my close links with dissident by posting audio tracks over the net.

Watch out for a new wave of producers, i've been hearing some top-notch tunes recently.

Alkemy Alkemy discovered free parties in 1999 thanks to the Pan!k crew and has never looked back since. Travelling near and far for the fun and frolics of parties, he soon discovered the wonder that is Jungle and jumped on the DJ bandwagon, moving to Bristol, the home of Drum'n'Bass.

He sticks to the darker side of Jungle, keeping DJ sets rolling and growling at you from the bass bins. Having a love for all broken beats, and a newly discovered love for Hardkore and Breakcore, Alkemy will combine styles together, but always keeping it heavy.

Alkemy's inspirations come from the sounds of Tech Itch, B-Key, Dylan, Plan B recordings, HEADFUK and P.R.A.N.K. soundsystems and DJ Creation.

The original sound engineer, Disco (AKA Diggidy) Dave knows silly amounts about the ins and outs of soundsystems, including how to figure out the internal dimensions of speakers and how to design and construct power amps. He will soon be working on developing more efficient amplifier systems as an electronics project.

Originally a punk drummer (like Noisy Boy), Disco Dave smoothly made the transition to D&B, noting the similarity of tempo and momentum between the two musics, coupled with the D.I.Y ethos that they both share. Ridgeway parties and the chance housing with Alkemy drew him inexorably into the world of free parties, though he favours club nites due to the amount of care and effort that can be taken in producing a truly unique environment through setting up extra décor and visuals.

Favouring Congo Natty style ragga jungle and the flawlessly produced techstep from the likes of Stakka and Skynet, Raiden and co., his sets showcase 170-180 BPM D&B with a high quality of sonic fidelity.

Kurtis E KarHeading the breakbeat faction within Dissident, Kurtis has been Djing on the rig since the very first party. He also comprises one half of the Squatman and Rentboy breaks live set outfit. His breaks range from housey and funky straight through to the filthiest broken, bass driven annihilating rhythms.

Raised on the mean streets of Stroud, herbalist Kurtis' early influences were the hip hop of Public Enemy and KRS One. He lists his breakbeat influences as B.L.I.M, Meat Katie, Son of the Electric Ghosts and Future Funk.

Perhaps his best-known track (played out at numerous parties using Stanton Final Scratch) is "Hardcore Mothafuckers", a bass-heavy slab of funk characterised by the sampled rantings of an alcoholic munter who wondered into the house and talked bollocks for fifteen minutes into a microphone.

Noisy Boy Noisy boy grew up in Cheltenham and, with an early passion for metal and punk rock picked up some drum sticks and joined 'kens chair'. influences included rancid, deftones, pulkas and pantera. He was introduced to jungle by his older brother at 16 and taken to his first bristol rave a year later. An ugly incident involving the environmental health commitee forced him to stop drumming and buying some decks was inevitable. The influences from dissident and prank partys, fix mix tapes and a new found love of the amen break led him to the darker regions of jungle. Quickly tiring of the increasingly static scene in Cheltenham he moved into the dissident squat in august 03 and has been getting noisy on the rig since. He earned his name(against his will) by playing uncompromising, relentless sets with tech itch, black sun empire, dsci4 and ice minus featuring heavily.

Presha On loan from Milton Keynes soundsytem Rekless, this is the man behind the Dissident T-shirt/ hoody designs. Fresh from his travels in Barcelona and Columbia, Presha is a musical werewolf: purveyor of dirty amen jungle by night, and soothing dub when the sun comes up. Politically active as ever, he is also the man behind the infamous "Bass Not Bombs" anti-war party we held at the Black Swan some time ago, and is set to do many more political parties in future.

Punksi "1742. After recent unearthing of a dilapitated tin mine just north of St. Ives, a strange apparition has stalked the dank alleys of St. Austell after nightfall. But freak fluctuations in ground rent have forced a relocation to a moss-covered lair 'neath the dusky spires of Baptist Mills.

Now forced to gain corporeal form in order to earn his keep, the spectre possessed the body of a young pirate of a nearby port, hook-handed and eye-patched the ghost-captain Punksi sails without cease, always broaching new horizons."

Punksi is a purveyor of very horrible music, coming out with genres such as "Spazcore" and "Fuckstep". He also runs the electronica label Clean Cut (www.cleancutrecords.co.uk) and is one third of the infamous Toxic Dancehall triumvirate.

ben Together with Punksi he created the Consensus in early 2001. Since hanging up his clubbing shoes, he has thrown his lot in with the dissident crew taking over the lighting/decor side of the operation. Normally only seen behind the lighting desk, he has finally achieved DJ status after putting together a classic set with the legendary Chomza.

Jah Beard Raised in the Nyabhingi mountains Jah Beard deals with all jungle that is ragga and the 8AM dub sessions. He acts as the Dissident mascot who derives great strength and power from his mighty beard which has not been cut, ever.

Mudbone Raised in the swamps of Missippi, Mudbone has been recruited into Dissident largely for his mud-wrestling prowess. He acts as a bouncer at our parties and will make any trouble-makers squeal like stuck pigs. Mudbone lives on a steady diet of whatever he can shoot from his drive and roadkill gumbo and likes both kinds of music- drum and bass.
